The position available in the WPHPA Surgical Oncology department is for a Physician Practice Medical Assistant who will play a vital role in supporting physicians, providers, and nurses during clinical and administrative procedures. This full-time role, scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, involves working closely with healthcare professionals to facilitate effective patient care in a fast-paced outpatient setting. The Medical Assistant must perform duties that are in compliance with the New York State Medical Assistant scope of practice and uphold the hospital's performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
The Medical Assistant's responsibilities are diverse and essential to the smooth functioning of the surgical oncology practice. Duties include managing patient flow, assisting patients with mobility and preparations for examinations, obtaining patient histories, performing screenings as per provider guidelines, and aiding in various clinical procedures. Additionally, the role encompasses administrative tasks such as scheduling procedures, managing patient records, obtaining pre-certifications, verifying insurance details, and maintaining accurate and up-to-date medical charts.
Maintaining a clean and orderly work environment is also a key part of this job. The Medical Assistant ensures examination rooms are stocked and sanitized according to infection control protocols, complies with departmental environmental responsibilities, and assists with electronic medical record management including queuing laboratory and radiology orders. The position requires active participation in patient care team meetings and adherence to hospital infection control standards.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- adherence to NYS Medical Assistant scope of practice
- BLS certification within 90 days of hire
- ability to perform clinical and administrative duties under supervision
- effective communication and organizational skills
- commitment to infection control and patient care standards
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- basic medical terminology knowledge
- proficiency in electronic scheduling (low)
- experience with electronic medical records (medium proficiency)
- BLS certification within 90 days of hire
- certification as a medical assistant (CMA) preferred
Job Duties
- Adheres to the WPH performance standards, policies and behaviors
- fulfills patient care responsibilities including checking schedules and organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting with walking transfers, dressing, specimen collection, exam preparation, obtaining patient history, performing provider-guided screenings, assisting with procedures, charting, relaying instructions, answering calls
- manages administrative tasks such as sending/receiving patient records, scheduling surgeries and tests, obtaining pre-certifications, verifying insurance and demographics, updating charts
- maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms, stocks supplies, completes logs
- follows environmental protocols including infection control, cleaning, record maintenance, supply ordering and stocking
- assists providers with EMR/EHR management including queuing lab/radiology orders
- respects patient rights, responds to emergencies, communicates concerns to supervisors
- performs medical assistant responsibilities including medical/surgical asepsis, obtaining vital signs, physical examination prep, assisting with procedures, specimen collection and handling, electrocardiography, and waived lab testing where applicable
- follows infection control standards including hand hygiene, PPE use, patient isolation, and equipment disinfection
- participates in patient care team meetings and daily huddles
- performs related duties as assigned
