Content Platforms & Operations within Disney is tasked with the ongoing development and evolution of the technical and operational functions essential to the global distribution and monetization of Disney's linear networks and theatrical content. This involves managing Disney’s media supply chain, storage, network and theatrical distribution operations, media localization, network transmission, and origination. The global team collaborates closely with Disney’s regional business units in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM, ensuring efficient operations and consistent delivery worldwide. Media Engineers at Disney are responsible for modernizing how content is acquired, produced, and distributed globally, with a strong focus on quality, efficiency, and system resiliency.
The Media Systems Engineer II role represents a key technical advancement focused on designing, architecting, and constructing the varied media technology platforms that power Disney’s linear and digital media offerings. This position involves close collaboration with senior engineers and external partners to develop, maintain, and enhance systems that meet the evolving needs of the business and operational leaders. The role demands a comprehensive understanding of broadcast production and distribution technologies, encompassing hardware, software, cloud platforms, and industry standards. Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or equivalent major
- Minimum 3 years of demonstrated relevant experience leading design/build and ensuring stability of live media production and distribution environments
- Scripting proficiency with Python, NodeJS, Bash, or PowerShell preferred
- Proficient knowledge of SMPTE standards and current relevant certifications
- Experience with broadcast control room equipment integration and broadcast cabling infrastructure
- Foundational cloud certification such as Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, CompTIA Cloud+, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate required
- Knowledge of media compression techniques including MPEG2/4, HEVC, JPEG 2000, JPEG XS
- Experience working with Evertz control systems and major media system vendors
- Ability to read and interpret AutoCAD and other technical drawings
- Physical ability to climb ladders, work on raised structures, operate aerial lifts, and hold a valid driver’s license
- Experience with AWS and cloud compute infrastructure
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced environments with minimal supervision
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or equivalent field
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience leading design, build, and maintenance of live media production and distribution environments
- Scripting proficiency in languages such as Python, NodeJS, Bash, or PowerShell is advantageous
- Knowledge of broadcast control room equipment and modern broadcast cabling infrastructure
- Proficient in SMPTE standards with current certifications like ST 292M, ST 424M, ST 2110, and others
- Experience with on-premises and cloud-based storage and compute platforms
- At least one foundational cloud certification such as Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, CompTIA Cloud+, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
- Experience with compression standards including MPEG2/4, HEVC, JPEG 2000, and JPEG XS
- Familiarity with Evertz software control systems and media asset management platforms
- Knowledge of Nielsen (NACAT), VANC equipment, Linear Acoustics, and related systems
- Understanding of coordinated receiver decoders, video and audio media file formats
- Ability to create and interpret technical drawings including AutoCAD
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Perl, Python, Ruby, Shell, C, or C++
- Proven track record designing and building IP-based broadcast equipment and studio technology
- Knowledge of production control and transmission systems including RF, satellite, and fiber distribution
- Experience with AWS and other cloud technologies including S3, Glacier storage, and EC2
Job Duties
- Architect, design, source, and construct media technology environments that enable acquisition, production, storage, streaming, and distribution of content
- Resolve issues affecting production, broadcast, and content distribution including system outages and malfunctions
- Analyze and troubleshoot streaming audio/video signals in SDI and IP 2110 essence flow routing environments
- Analyze and troubleshoot cloud platforms as necessary
- Manage third-party service providers ensuring compliance with service agreements
- Select, train, motivate and evaluate technical staff, coordinate training and implement discipline procedures
- Specify and procure equipment, supplies and materials for media technology systems within budget
- Develop long range plans for future media technology needs including capital improvements
- Assist in policy and procedure development to maximize system integration for business goals
- Provide operational support for audio and video production/distribution systems across the enterprise
- Utilize system software health monitoring, troubleshoot and repair system problems, install software patches and updates
- Perform hardware and software upgrades under supervision
- Participate in complex engineering projects
- Review and contribute to system and workflow documentation
- Conduct training and development sessions
- Influence organizational strategy and operations through strong interpersonal skills
- Work effectively in a fast-paced environment managing multiple priorities
