The Media and AV Technology Coordinator is a vital full-time, year-round position at Amherst College, based within the Student Center. This role has an hourly wage range of $25.00 to $27.00, which varies depending on factors including education, training, experience, and tenure status. Serving as the technical specialist for all audio, visual, and media technology operations within the Student Center, the coordinator plays a key role in supporting a diverse range of events including meetings, performances, lectures, conferences, and student organization programs. This position requires both technical expertise and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with campus departments and student groups, ensuring professional and reliable technology support tailored to event needs.

The coordinator's responsibilities include managing and maintaining the Student Center's AV systems, which encompass sound, lighting, projection, streaming devices, and digital signage. They also oversee equipment maintenance, preventative repairs, and technological upgrades, recommending new tools and innovations to enhance the facility’s capabilities. The role involves working closely with the Program and Building Director to assess and meet the evolving technology requirements of events and daily operations, contributing to high-quality presentations and seamless event execution.

Additionally, the coordinator supports signature divisional programs such as Orientation, Mammoth Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Campus Parties, Homecoming, Spring Concert, and Commencement, among other large-scale campus events. The position's schedule is generally from 2 pm to 10 pm but requires flexibility to accommodate evening and weekend programming. Beyond technical operations, the coordinator is responsible for managing scheduling logistics, budgeting, purchasing, and vendor coordination related to AV technology, while collaborating with IT, Facilities, and Student Affairs staff to ensure integrated campus technology support.

This multifaceted role also includes training staff and student users on AV system operation to promote a culture of professionalism, customer service, and technical excellence among student employees. Keeping abreast of emerging trends in media technology and higher education event management is an essential aspect of the position, helping Amherst College stay at the forefront of innovative event technology solutions.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Media Technology, Communications, Information Technology, or a related field
  • 2-4 years of experience in AV coordination, media services, or event technology support
  • Strong technical proficiency with AV systems, live sound, projection, and streaming platforms such as Zoom, Teams, and OBS
  • Excellent organizational, troubleshooting, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Successful completion of required background and reference checks

Job Duties

  • Coordinate and execute AV and media technology needs for events held in the Student Center and within Student Affairs campus spaces
  • Provide on-site technical support during events including setup, operation, troubleshooting, and breakdown
  • Ensure high-quality sound, lighting, and visual presentations for programs ranging from small meetings to large-scale campus events
  • Collaborate with the Program and Building Director to assess technology needs and develop appropriate technical plans
  • Maintain, inventory, and ensure the proper functioning of AV and media equipment
  • Oversee preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of AV systems and infrastructure
  • Develop and deliver training materials for staff and student users on AV system operation and best practices
