Job Description
Kroger, originating from a single humble grocery store in Cincinnati over a century ago, has flourished into the nation's largest grocer with nearly 2,800 stores across 35 states, operating under 28 distinct brand names. This extensive network exemplifies Kroger's commitment to delivering quality food and exceptional customer experiences to diverse communities. As America's grocer, Kroger prides itself on its dedication to innovation, inclusivity, and a shared passion for food and people, all united by the mission to "Feed the Human Spirit." The company's core values—respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety—are deeply embedded in its culture and daily operations.
This role is designed to create an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service while ensuring a safe and clean environment that encourages customers to return. As an Assistant Department Manager, the candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the department manager to meet sales and profit goals and uphold rigorous quality assurance standards. By embracing Kroger's Customer 1st philosophy, the assistant manager will motivate and guide associates to consistently deliver excellent customer service. The role demands a strong commitment to Kroger's core values, fostering a workplace culture where respect and integrity are paramount.
The Assistant Department Manager will oversee food handling processes, training associates on proper preparation, portion control, and food safety in line with state health regulations. They will ensure high standards of food presentation, quality, and adherence to company recipes. The position requires effective communication to maintain continuous coordination with management regarding kitchen needs, repairs, inventory, and supplier orders, including external orders from Fishmarket. The manager will also help develop and distribute daily job lists for Chef Shoppe, Bistro, and Pastry sections, ensuring all team members understand and follow best practices.
Kroger offers flexible scheduling for both full-time and part-time roles, with a competitive range of benefits including comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage through company plans or collective bargaining agreements. Employees benefit from paid time off, including holiday and sick leave, eligibility-dependent. Kroger supports associate well-being with emotional and financial support via free counseling and confidential financial coaching. Additional perks include valuable discounts on food, travel, and technology, as well as up to $21,000 in tuition reimbursement through their industry-leading Continuing Education program. For those seeking growth, Kroger provides career advancement opportunities through robust training programs and diverse career paths, fostering both personal and professional development.
This position requires candidates to have a culinary degree and competency in knife handling and speed, combined with effective communication skills and the ability to manage stressful situations. The ideal candidate may also possess skills in a second language, enhancing communication within diverse teams and with customers. The role is geared towards individuals who are passionate about food and customer service, eager to learn, and ready to contribute to a vibrant, dynamic team environment where food is truly at the heart of everything. By joining Kroger, employees become part of a legacy of caring and purpose-driven work that feeds not only customers but also communities and team members alike.
