Job Description
The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) is a vital agency within the Department of Defense that operates a vast global network of commissaries providing groceries and household goods to military personnel, retirees, and their families. The mission of DeCA is to deliver savings and quality products to military members and their families, ensuring convenience and cost-effective shopping. Established with a commitment to serve the armed forces community, DeCA plays an essential role in supporting military readiness and quality of life by offering a reliable source of food and goods at competitively low prices.
DeCA operates commissary stores on military installations worldwide, maintaining high standards for food safety, product variety, and customer service. The agency is dedicated to upholding regulatory requirements in all aspects of store operations, including meat departments that require strict adherence to health, safety, and sanitation policies. As a federal entity, DeCA emphasizes the importance of integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to public service in all its employees. Working at DeCA means contributing directly to the welfare of military communities and ensuring they have access to quality food products through well-managed commissaries.
The Meatcutter Supervisor position within DeCA's commissary operations is a supervisory role responsible for managing the entire meat department. This position involves planning, organizing, and directing daily meat department operations to ensure an adequate quantity and quality of meat products are available for sale. The supervisor works under the general direction of the Deputy Commissary Officer or Commissary Officer who provides overall priorities, policies, and procedures for the department.
In this role, the Meatcutter Supervisor oversees and directs a team of subordinate employees, ensuring that workload requirements are met efficiently. A key responsibility includes establishing prices for all meat products sold, maintaining production records, and generating relevant reports that track departmental operations. The supervisor routinely inspects meat cutting equipment and monitors temperature levels to ensure compliance with safety standards. Additionally, the role requires frequent inspections of work areas to maintain regulatory compliance with sanitary and safety policies, a crucial aspect given the nature of food handling and processing.
This position demands a high level of leadership, attention to detail, and expertise in meatcutting techniques and processes. The supervisor must possess knowledge of tools commonly used in meatcutting, including handsaws, bonedusters, electric saws, meat tenderizers, slicers, and grinders. Effective team leadership and training skills are essential to instruct and monitor employee performance, conduct, work schedules, and training needs.
The Meatcutter Supervisor role is a full-time, permanent position located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, with a wage range of $32.47 to $37.88 per hour based on a WS-5 pay scale, not to exceed 80 hours bi-weekly. Work schedules may be irregular, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the operational needs of the commissary. The role is non-telework eligible and non-remote.
Working conditions involve exposure to cold temperatures typically 50 degrees Fahrenheit or less, with substantial variation when working inside chill rooms or freezer areas where temperatures may drop to minus 10 degrees or colder. The role requires physical stamina, including continuous walking and standing and frequently lifting or moving boxes of meat weighing 25 pounds or more. The position entails a supervisory probationary period and the successful completion of background investigations and suitability determinations is mandatory.
