The Meat Manager role at this retail grocery company is vital to maintaining the quality and operational excellence of the meat section. This is a non-exempt, hourly-paid position that reports directly to the Assistant Branch Manager or Branch Manager. The Meat Manager is responsible for overseeing all activities related to the receipt, stocking, and display of meat products while ensuring exceptional customer service. A critical aspect of the role involves supervising the cleanliness and appearance of the meat department by adhering to both government regulations and corporate policies.

Key responsibilities include managing inventory controls to reduce shrinkage and spoilage, maintaining accurate computer inventory through regular physical inventories, and overseeing vendor ordering to balance competitive pricing and sufficient stock availability. The Meat Manager also enforces HACCP regulations and conducts periodic audits to guarantee safety standards, which are essential in a food-related environment.

This position requires leadership capabilities as the Meat Manager will oversee a team including Assistant Meat Managers, Meat Supervisors, and Stockers. Responsibilities extend to developing work schedules, training employees on safety and operating procedures, and evaluating staff performance with recommendations for disciplinary actions when necessary. The Meat Manager also participates in the hiring process by interviewing candidates and recommending new hires to ensure the team is qualified and competent.

The Meat Manager is expected to ensure that all equipment such as scales and label machines are properly utilized and maintained. Additionally, the role requires special attention to merchandising details such as logical product adjacencies and creating appealing impulse areas to promote sales. The role demands physical endurance to meet the lifting and movement requirements, as it involves frequent lifting of products up to 50 lbs and requires constant standing and walking.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or high school diploma or GED with at least 4 years experience in customer service
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients and the public
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, mass and volume
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Job Duties

  • Ensure proper customer service and develop relationships with large customers
  • Supervise all meat department activities including product placement, rotation, signage, and displays
  • Maintain department appearance, cleanliness, and adherence to ordinances
  • Develop schedules, monitor employee performance, and recommend discipline
  • Train employees in job responsibilities and safe operating procedures
  • Interview candidates and recommend hires
  • Discipline employees when necessary and recommend terminations
  • Ensure employees perform HACCP inspections and conduct periodic audits
  • Review inventory for product rotation to prevent shrinkage
  • Ensure correct shelf pricing reflecting current market conditions
  • Supervise receiving of meat products and paperwork completion
  • Maintain accurate computer inventory levels through physical inventories
  • Manage refrigerated equipment maintenance and schedules
  • Oversee ordering of meat products from vendors ensuring competitive pricing and minimal shrink
  • Ensure employees can operate equipment like scales and label machines
  • Coordinate proper tagging and stacking of pallets
  • Maintain cleanliness through regular maintenance schedules
  • Manage excess inventory storage
  • Ensure trash removal and proper waste handling
  • Communicate low or out of stock information to Inventory Controller
  • Maintain accurate signage and flyer price reflection
  • Coordinate merchandising for aisles and impulse areas
  • Perform weekly self-audits of the meat department
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
