The Meat Department Manager role based in Madison, Wisconsin, offers an exciting opportunity to lead and coordinate the production, sale, and distribution operations within Metcalfe’s Market meat department. This managerial position is integral to ensuring the department’s successful operation through comprehensive staff hiring, training, supervision, and scheduling. The manager plays a pivotal role in achieving sales targets, overseeing inventory rotation, and maintaining safety and sanitation standards. The role requires working varied shifts that include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays in alignment with staffing needs.
More than just overseeing operations, the Meat Department Manager is expected to engage positively with customers, address their concerns with energy, and uphold the company’s procedural guidelines and established standards. The manager is instrumental in steering a motivated team that embraces continuous quality improvement, maintains high product knowledge, and adapts to evolving company technologies including software systems. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One or more years of previous Journeyman Meat Cutter, seafood department, restaurant or kitchen experience
- One or more years of management or supervisory experience in a fast-paced retail environment
- Strong people management skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Thorough knowledge of the retail food business and perishable department operations
- Ability to make timely and effective decisions
- Ability to work well under pressure in a diverse, fast-paced and stressful environment
- Knowledge of technology, computer use, and Microsoft Office software
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees
- Ability to calculate figures and apply basic algebra and geometry
- Ability to apply common sense understanding for instructions and problem solving
- Food Safety Certification required, Metcalfe's will help certify if needed
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate’s degree or technical school training preferred
- One or more years of previous Journeyman meat cutter, seafood department, restaurant or kitchen experience
- One or more years of management or supervisory experience in a fast-paced retail environment
- Strong people management skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Thorough knowledge of the retail food business and perishable department operations
- Merchandising skills
- Ability to make timely and effective decisions
- Ability to work well under pressure in a diverse, fast-paced, and stressful environment
- Knowledge of technology and computer use including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word and Excel
Job Duties
- Supports the department's staff and works through timely response to questions with a caring and appreciative attitude
- Determines variety and quantity of products and department supplies to be ordered or produced according to orders and/or sales projections
- Monitors and controls department costs and expenses including proper ordering and inventory control, ensuring weighing procedures, controlling shrink, and monitoring displays
- Conducts inventories and cycle counts as required
- Develops and achieves the departmental budget including contribution to overhead, margin, gross profit, labor and purchase goals
- Directs and schedules department personnel and activities including timekeeping
- Provides insight and input in personnel decisions such as hiring, discipline, reward and termination
- Ensures proper training to all employees
- Maintains accurate personnel records for all direct reports
- Maintains a safe work environment for employees, vendors and customers
- Observes sales floor and back stock conditions and takes corrective action
- Monitors and addresses customer issues or questions
- Sustains high level of product knowledge and product preparation
- Works toward continuous quality improvement
- Stays current with changing company technology including software programs
- Leads, coaches, teaches and reinforces Metcalfe's culture, customer service, and performance expectations
- Upholds, supports and promotes all company policies and procedures
- Follows safe food handling and local health department standards
- Performs other duties as assigned
