Terracon's Materials Team is integral to the company’s mission, representing the largest group of technicians and inspectors. The role of Department Manager at Terracon is a leadership position responsible for overseeing all projects within a department to ensure timely execution that meets client expectations and company standards. This includes supervising the preparation of service proposals and cost estimates, managing daily operations, and participating in business development activities. The manager oversees staff recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and works to optimize the utilization of equipment and resources. Ensuring safety compliance and continuous quality improvement are primary responsibilities, as well as driving revenue growth and project profitability through effective management and strategic planning.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline including Engineering, Environmental Science or Geology and eight years’ practical experience
  • Or a minimum of twelve years’ related experience without a degree
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Master’s degree or PhD preferred
  • A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline such as Engineering, Environmental Science or Geology
  • Eight years practical experience in relevant field
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Licensed Texas Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred
  • Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer status preferred
  • Master’s degree or PhD preferred

Job Duties

  • Supervise or monitor all projects in progress to ensure timely execution and adherence to client requirements and company standards
  • Supervise preparation of proposals and cost estimates to clients ensuring proper scoping, manpower availability and pricing for profitability
  • Supervise daily operations including staff training, development, performance review, equipment utilization, safety oversight, quality control, and timely delivery of services
  • Plan and participate in business development activities to identify, develop, win and execute project opportunities and maintain client relationships
  • Responsible for preparation of proposals and cost estimates with varying degrees of complexity
  • Direct short-range business development activities of department personnel to ensure fees support payroll
  • Plan and execute recruitment, selection, training, mentoring, and development of department employees
  • Prepare and execute the department annual business plan
  • Oversee and manage key department metrics including revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing, collections, and profitability
  • Develop project-related risk understanding and ensure compliance with company risk policies
  • Lead safety efforts and promote safety rules, guidelines and pre-task planning
  • Monitor and promote continuous quality improvement and consistent quality standards on projects and proposal delivery
  • Perform other duties as assigned
