The University of Akron is currently seeking a Master Building Services Worker to join their team. This role is critical in maintaining cleanliness, safety, and appearance of the university’s buildings, furniture, and fixtures. Reporting under general supervision, the Master Building Services Worker performs duties involving janitorial work and maintenance and acts as a team leader by training and guiding other building service workers. The position requires hands-on work such as sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, polishing floors, cleaning carpets and upholstery, and maintaining restrooms and other facility areas to high standards. The individual will also be responsible for inventory management, ordering supplies, and coordinating special cleaning projects.

Key responsibilities include planning and assigning tasks to staff, inspecting work quality, training new employees, and maintaining cleaning equipment. The Master Building Services Worker must be capable of lifting substantial weights and performing physically demanding tasks such as climbing ladders, bending, and crouching. The work environment includes exposure to varying temperatures, moisture, chemical substances, noise, and potentially hazardous materials. Shift work with a consistent schedule from Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m., with the possibility of overtime and mandatory call-ins, is a standard part of this role.

This is a union position with salary starting at $16.48 per hour, increasing to $17.00 per hour after one year, complemented by full benefits and a pension plan. The ideal candidate for the Master Building Services Worker position will have a minimum of two years' experience operating cleaning equipment like vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, burnishers, automatic scrubbers, and upholstery machines. Experience in building, furniture, and fixture maintenance, along with leadership experience, is preferred. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with the ability to understand and perform basic arithmetic and read and write English proficiently. A valid Ohio Driver’s License is mandatory for this role.

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • minimum of two years experience operating vacuum, floor buffer, floor burnisher, automatic floor scrubber, carpet and upholstery equipment
  • experience maintaining and cleaning buildings, furniture and fixtures
  • leadership experience preferred
  • ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers including fractions and decimals
  • ability to read and write using English vocabulary
  • valid Ohio Driver's License

Job Duties

  • Perform all essential functions of a building services worker
  • sweep, mop, strip, wax, polish and renew floor surfaces
  • clean and shampoo rugs and carpets
  • clean, dust and wax furniture and fixtures in classrooms, labs, offices and residence halls
  • clean and empty trash receptacles
  • scrub, clean and sanitize restrooms including sinks, mirrors, commodes, urinals, showers, stalls
  • stock supplies
  • plan, lead and assign work for assigned staff
  • inspect buildings and review quality of work performed by assistants
  • train new employees on equipment operation and job duties
  • coordinate and plan special projects
  • record inventory and order supplies
  • clean and maintain entrance glass, hallways, lobbies, stairs, elevators, walls, doors
  • remove snow and ice from walkways
  • check supplies and stock closets
  • maintain equipment
  • complete work, time and material usage reports
  • perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
