Job Description

This job opening is with a company operating a Regional Distribution Center (RDC) responsible for the efficient management of yard activities and transportation operations involved in the daily handling of inbound and outbound shipments. As a pivotal part of the logistics and transportation department, this company focuses on providing seamless warehouse and transportation services that ensure timely delivery and pick-up of goods. The organization values operational excellence, safety, and compliance with all regulatory and company policies, aiming to maintain high productivity levels and minimal operational disruptions.

The role available is a full-time management position tasked with overseeing all activities within the RDC yard, including managing personnel who perform these critical functions. The position demands a leader who can coordinate and direct a team of up to nine transportation department associates, including supervisors, leads, and transportation operations associates. The individual in this role will be responsible for maintaining accurate records, troubleshooting and resolving system issues affecting load processing, and mitigating any disruptions expected in inbound or outbound delivery operations.

The incumbent will also communicate regularly with the Director of Transportation, Claims Coordinator, and other key stakeholders to ensure shipping activities are aligned with operational expectations. Collaboration with warehouse operations teams and carriers is vital to facilitate smooth and efficient yard operations. In addition to overseeing yard service operations such as managing yard jockeys, this position requires maintaining a safe working environment by monitoring trailer locations, temperature settings, and refrigerated trailer performance.

Leadership responsibilities include hiring, training, developing, and evaluating staff, enforcing discipline, and ensuring all transportation functions are adequately supported. This role serves as a backup for other transportation leaders within the department when necessary. Furthermore, the role involves understanding and enforcing company policies, including attendance, ethical standards, and associate handbooks. Candidates must be prepared to accept special projects or additional duties as assigned.

This position requires an individual who is proactive, self-motivated, and able to communicate effectively with people at all organizational levels. A strong grasp of logistics and transportation operations, basic computer skills, and familiarity with the regulations covering interstate commerce are preferred. The position operates under diverse and sometimes demanding working conditions, including exposure to mechanical equipment, varying weather conditions, and the physical demands of the job, such as lifting and moving loads. The candidate must be adaptable to varying schedules and potential travel related to RDC operations.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age

Job Duties

  • Assist in resolving any system issues which may arise in daily load processing
  • Monitor carrier and system status messages and mitigate any expected inbound and/or outbound delivery impacts
  • Communicate daily with Director of Transportation, Claims Coordinator, and Transportation Supervisors, Leads, and Associates concerning shipping activities
  • Communicate daily with warehouse operations teams and RDC carriers to facilitate efficient production levels and yard operations
  • Oversee, hire, train, develop, evaluate and maintain discipline of Transportation Supervisors, Leads, and Transportation Operations Associates
  • Coordinate personnel coverage to ensure completion of transportation functions and support yard activities
  • Manage yard service operations to maintain adequate service levels to support warehouse operations
  • Oversee yard processes to ensure accuracy of trailer locations, temperature settings, refrigerated trailer performance, and safety
  • Administer all company policies and procedures including training, disciplining and termination of associates
  • Maintain accurate filing systems
  • Back up Transportation staff in their duties and responsibilities
  • Understand and comply with all applicable company policies
  • Accept additional responsibilities or special projects as requested
