The Manager Structural Design role plays a pivotal part within Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co., responsible for leading the structural design team in researching, planning, and developing structural products and systems tailored to meet precise engineering and cost specifications. This role commands oversight over key design activities including welded fabrications, castings, and machined part development. The manager ensures projects are completed on time and within budget, guaranteeing that designs adhere to customer requirements and technical standards. Supervisory duties include managing a team of 4 to 6 employees, conducting hiring, training, performance appraisals, and fostering teamwork with other departments to drive project success. This position involves both strategic coordination and hands-on technical input, offering a unique opportunity to influence product innovation that supports Liebherr's industry-leading mining equipment and machinery.

Job Requirements

  • Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree with engineering experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with over 10 years experience
  • At least 2 years experience in managing technical people
  • Knowledge of structural design engineering
  • Experienced with finite element analysis and material properties
  • Proficient in database software, AutoCAD, Pro-engineer Design software, Microsoft Project and MS Office
  • Knowledge of BaaN system related to truck BOM and inventory control
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Ability to interpret various forms of instructions
  • Must maintain discretion
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally
  • Valid driver license and passport required
  • Must maintain MSHA certification

Job Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree or Master of Engineering degree with 4 years of engineering experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy industrial equipment design and development
  • Minimum 2 years experience managing technical personnel
  • Knowledge of structural design engineering
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis and material properties
  • Proficiency in database software, AutoCAD, Pro-engineer Design software, Microsoft Project, and MS Office
  • Knowledge of BaaN system related to truck Bill of Material (BOM) structure and inventory control
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and drawings
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts
  • Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to maintain discretion
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%
  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid driver license and passport
  • Ability to maintain Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) certification

Job Duties

  • Designs products and systems including welded fabrications, castings, and machined parts
  • Develops project plans, coordinates projects, communicates changes and progress, and completes projects on time and within budget
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Supports fabrication and installation activities ensuring conformance to engineering design and customer specifications
  • Supports operation, maintenance, and repair activities to optimize machine and equipment utilization
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate system malfunctions
  • Works independently and collaboratively with Group Managers, Engineers, Designers, and production personnel
  • Forecasts department operating costs and contributes to budget preparation
  • Supervises 4 to 6 employees, managing overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Structural Design team
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, training, appraising performance, rewarding or disciplining employees, and resolving complaints
