The role of Manager of Pastoral Services at Baylor Scott & White Health is central to enhancing the spiritual and moral support offered within the healthcare system. This leadership position involves managing all aspects of pastoral services to meet the religious, spiritual, sacramental, moral, and ethical needs of patients and staff across multiple facilities. The Manager facilitates and coordinates pastoral care programs, including counseling, sacramental ministry, memorial services, baptisms, weddings, anointing, and bereavement support. As a key figure within the healthcare team, the Manager of Pastoral Services supervises chaplains and mentors Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) student chaplains, ensuring adherence to Joint Commission standards for patient care.

A vital part of the role is offering pastoral support during end-of-life care, providing comfort and counseling to patients and their families during critical moments. Acting as a liaison, the Manager represents the department to facility leadership and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, and counselors to ensure comprehensive patient care. The Manager also leads initiatives to advance religious ministry knowledge through research and community engagement, building meaningful partnerships with local churches, community agencies, and service organizations. Volunteer recruitment, training, and coordination also fall under this position’s responsibility.

Ensuring proper documentation and clinical supervision of staff and volunteers, the Manager maintains high standards of service quality and professional development. The role requires a deep understanding of various religious beliefs, excellent communication skills, and the ability to counsel individuals during times of stress effectively. Technological proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office and electronic medical documentation is also essential. The ideal candidate will possess denominational endorsement or ordination/commissioning to ministry, with certification in Clinical Pastoral Education preferred. Job Requirements

  • Masters degree in theological studies or related field
  • Four years of experience in pastoral care or related role
  • Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) credential required

  • Capability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic medical records
  • Denominational endorsement preferred

Job Qualifications

  • Competence in Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling, payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email
  • Denominational endorsement for chaplaincy, ordination or commissioning to ministry preferred
  • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) certification by ACPE preferred

Job Duties

  • Manages and coordinates pastoral care, counseling, and religious services including sacramental ministry, memorial services, baptisms, weddings, anointing, and bereavement needs
  • Supervises chaplains and mentors clinical pastoral education student chaplains
  • Provides assessment and support to palliative care patients following joint commission requirements
  • Supports end-of-life care by offering pastoral support and counseling to patients and families
  • Serves as department representative to facility president or other managers
  • Coordinates and consults with physicians, nurses, social workers, counselors, and staff as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Conducts studies to advance knowledge and develop effective religious ministry for patients, family, and staff
  • Develops relationships with local churches, community agencies, and service organizations
  • Recruits, trains, and coordinates pastoral care volunteers
  • Develops and maintains procedures for recording spiritual counseling
  • Oversees staff and volunteers and provides clinical supervision
  • Consults with staff and reports to senior pastoral care managers
