Job Description
The August Wilson African American Cultural Center is a premier cultural institution located at the gateway of Pittsburgh's vibrant Cultural District in Pennsylvania. Named after the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Pittsburgh native August Wilson, the Center is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the artistic achievements of African American culture and the broader African Diaspora. The center is renowned nationally and internationally for its performing and visual arts exhibitions, while simultaneously fostering local artistic talent by providing a supportive environment for emerging artists. The institution serves as a vital cultural hub, connecting diverse communities through substantive artistic experiences that reflect the rich heritage and contemporary expressions of African American life.
Housed in an iconic, architecturally significant building designed by award-winning architect Alison Williams, the Center boasts multiple exhibition galleries, a 492-seat performance theater, multipurpose spaces for educational programming, community events, lectures, and hands-on learning. These dynamic spaces create a unique environment where arts, education, and community intersect. The venue's sweeping walkways, rehearsal studios, and communal meeting spaces underscore the Center's mission to be a welcoming and accessible gathering place for artistic dialogue and cultural exchange.
The role of Manager of Ticketing and Box Office Operations at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center is a pivotal position responsible for overseeing all facets of ticketing, group sales, box office functions, and patron services. The Manager plays a critical role in driving revenue generation and enhancing audience development by collaborating closely with marketing and development teams. This full-time position offers a starting salary of $50,000 plus a comprehensive company benefits package, reflecting the importance of the role within the organization.
As the Manager of Ticketing and Box Office Operations, the successful candidate will manage single ticket sales, group sales, reporting, and patron services to ensure exceptional customer experiences. The responsibility also includes maintaining and training staff on Tessitura ticketing software, coordinating event logistics and back-end support, and building webpages for ticketed events. The role requires strong leadership skills to manage box office staff and work as a key liaison with promoters, presenters, and venue partners. The Manager also executes post-event audits, manages complimentary, VIP, sponsor, education, and staff ticket allocations, and supports the implementation of new ticketing software in coordination with the Information Systems and Technical Services (ISTS) department. This position demands adaptability and strong organizational skills to handle the fast-paced and dynamic nature of cultural event operations.
This position offers an opportunity to be part of an influential institution that not only preserves and celebrates the legacy of August Wilson but also nurtures the continuing evolution of African American cultural arts. The Manager will work within a passionate and motivated team that champions diversity, equity, and inclusion, helping to ensure that the Center remains a beacon for artistic excellence and community engagement. In addition to overseeing daily operational success, this role contributes significantly to the Center’s mission of enriching the Pittsburgh community and beyond through profound artistic and cultural experiences.
