The role of Manager, Competitive Programs at The Pokemon Company International is a critical leadership position focused on driving the competitive live operations for the path to the annual Pokemon World Championships across multiple product categories. This dynamic role entails managing a team dedicated to planning and executing competitive events, collaborating closely with game developers, and developing long-term strategies that enhance player engagement and the overall value of the competitive scene. Key responsibilities include overseeing the global qualification processes across multiple regions including North America, Europe, Latin America, MESA, and Oceania, as well as managing budgets, event schedules, player rewards systems, and developing incentives that motivate and reward player participation.

The Manager will contribute significantly to shaping the competitive vision of the company by leading the creation of robust player qualification systems and ensuring that competitive events are executed with integrity and fairness. Additionally, this position involves partnering with internal departments such as Organized Play, Marketing, Legal, Broadcast, and Events to maintain the high standards expected by the Pokemon community. The role demands strategic thinking to negotiate contracts and manage relationships with global external vendors while continuously analyzing competitive data to support player engagement and growth. Candidates for this role will find themselves at the forefront of a fast-paced, passionate, and innovative environment in the esports and gaming industry, with a base salary range between $119,300 and $215,000 per year, dependent on qualifications and experience. This is an exempt position with an expectation of about 6-8 weeks of travel annually, blending hybrid work arrangements to support a flexible work culture.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five plus years of relevant professional experience
  • Two plus years of people management experience
  • Experience in esports, competitive gaming, events or sports management
  • Deep knowledge of competitive systems and player engagement formats
  • Proven ability to manage diverse teams including multi-office reports
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of competitive gaming priorities across teams and departments
  • Ability to adapt to changing deadlines and priorities
  • Strategic level operational experience
  • Experience working with international external partners
  • Willingness to learn and become SME in multiple Pokemon products
  • Travel availability approximately 6-8 weeks per year

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five plus years of experience in esports, competitive gaming, events or sports management
  • Proven success in managing and developing a team of diverse skill sets and backgrounds
  • Deep knowledge and passion for competitive systems and player engagement mechanisms
  • Excellent process-oriented analytical skills
  • Expert in competitive systems including season long qualification planning and point design
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to understand and provide constructive review of technical requirements for tournament hardware
  • Experience working with external partners, particularly international ones
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Job Duties

  • Manage and develop team members responsible for strategic execution of various competitive products such as the Pokemon TCG, VG, Pokemon UNITE, and Pokemon GO
  • Oversee the global qualification process for multiple products across North America, Europe, Latin America, MESA, and Oceania
  • Plan, budget, and allocate support in line with underlying business and company priorities for each product
  • Develop quarterly and annual goals meeting department and company objectives
  • Manage competitive program and live ops calendars, as well as oversee the creation of prizing tables, digital rewards, and other player incentives
  • Lead and partner with internal and external teams, including game developers, to build the path to Worlds for multiple products
  • Work closely with Organized Play, Marketing, Legal, Broadcast and Events teams to ensure the path to Worlds is supported as designed
