Job Description
The Door is a well-established nonprofit organization founded in 1972, dedicated to empowering educationally and economically disadvantaged youth in New York City. The organization provides a comprehensive range of services under one roof, ensuring that over eleven thousand young people from all five boroughs annually receive vital support. The Door's services include primary health care, reproductive care and health education, mental health counseling, legal assistance, supportive housing, High School Equivalency (HSE) programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, tutoring and homework help, college preparation and computer classes, career and education services, job placement, daily meals, and cultural arts programs. All of these offerings come together to foster an environment where young people are given the tools to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
The Maintenance Worker position at The Door plays a critical role in ensuring that the facilities remain safe, clean, and well-maintained for all visitors and staff members. Reporting directly to the Director of Facilities, this part-time position requires dedication to maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of classrooms, offices, restrooms, meeting rooms, gymnasiums, corridors, basements, and storage areas. The scheduled working hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, offering an hourly wage ranging from $18.00 to $20.00.
The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities including cleaning rooms and communal areas, emptying trash receptacles, and using cleaning equipment such as brooms, mops, and vacuum cleaners to maintain all floor surfaces. The Maintenance Worker also follows a strict recycling schedule promoting environmental responsibility by disposing of cardboard boxes, paper, and other recyclable materials properly. Restroom supplies are replenished as necessary, and inventories for cleaning and maintenance supplies are maintained with timely communication to supervisors for replenishment.
Snow and emergency response are also part of the duties, requiring the Maintenance Worker to clear snow and ice from entrances and walkways to ensure safe access to the building. Specialized cleaning tasks such as stripping and waxing floors, shampooing carpets, high dusting, and cleaning kitchen appliances like refrigerators are expected. Additionally, the incumbent assists in setting up and dismantling chairs, tables, and other equipment needed for various programs according to the daily schedule.
The Door is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. As part of their employment policy, they require all new hires to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they qualify for an exemption, supporting a safe environment for all staff and visitors. Furthermore, The Door is an equal opportunity employer that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and identities, fostering a culture of respect and inclusion.
This position is ideal for individuals who possess a strong work ethic, reliability, excellent communication skills, and the physical ability to lift at least 75 pounds. Working as a Maintenance Worker at The Door provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to an impactful organization that makes a difference in the lives of youth across New York City by maintaining a clean and safe environment where vital services are delivered effectively.
