Job Description

This position is with a municipal public works department dedicated to maintaining and improving city infrastructure and public services. The department plays a crucial role in ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of community facilities and roadways through its various sanitation and maintenance programs. As part of a city government, the department focuses on providing essential services that enhance the quality of life for residents by managing waste disposal, street repairs, traffic control, and general upkeep of public assets. The role involves performing a wide range of manual labor and semi-skilled maintenance tasks related to public works and sanitation. The position requires adaptability, as job duties can vary in scope and frequency depending on the department’s immediate needs. Responsibilities include picking up and hauling trash and debris to support the sanitation department; filling potholes, repairing pavement, curbs, and sidewalks; and maintaining city-owned facilities through minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and masonry work. The employee will also operate various city vehicles and equipment such as snowplows, salt spreaders, and dump trucks, sometimes on an assigned basis. Maintaining city vehicles and tools is another important function, ensuring equipment remains in good working condition for daily operations. Additionally, the role occasionally involves preparing for special events, demonstrating the need for versatility and teamwork.

This position requires physical strength and stamina, with frequent manual labor under varying weather conditions. The ability to lift and carry heavy objects regularly is essential. Strong knowledge of public works safety protocols and quality standards ensures that maintenance tasks are performed efficiently and safely. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are necessary to follow instructions and collaborate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Job Requirements

  • Graduation from a general or technical high school, preferably including or supplemented by vocational courses
  • some experience in manual labor or semi-skilled maintenance and repair work
  • must have a current Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment
  • ability to perform manual labor for extended periods
  • ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from a general or technical high school, preferably including or supplemented by vocational courses
  • some experience in the performance of manual labor or semi-skilled maintenance and repair work
  • knowledge of tools, materials, methods and best practices for street maintenance and repair
  • knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance
  • ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under normal and adverse weather conditions
  • ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • knowledge of best practices regarding public works safety and quality
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees

Job Duties

  • Picks up and hauls trash and debris from assigned areas and assists sanitation department as needed
  • fills in potholes and cracks in city streets
  • assists in repairing and replacing pavement, curbs, and sidewalks
  • assists in the maintenance and repairs to traffic signs and pavement markings
  • operates trucks with equipment, including but not limited to, snowplow, salt spreader, dump truck, and other motorized equipment on an assigned basis
  • maintains city owned facilities, performs semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and masonry work
  • paints city owned facilities including buildings, pavement, and the like
  • assists in the servicing and minor repair of city vehicles and equipment
  • maintains tools in proper working conditions
  • maintains proper level of supplies
  • performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, preparation of special events
