Job Description

Kansas City Public Works Department is a vital municipal organization dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure and public services that keep the city running smoothly. The department's responsibilities include managing streets, sidewalks, streetlights, traffic signals, and overseeing major capital improvement projects that will shape the future of Kansas City. Additionally, the department handles waste services and leads initiatives aimed at improving safety, mobility, and the overall quality of life for residents across various neighborhoods in Kansas City. This commitment to service ensures the city remains sustainable and well-functioning for all residents, workers, and visitors.

The Public Works Department is currently seeking dedicated individuals for a full-time position within its Street Maintenance divisions, specifically for District I and District III. These positions offer a competitive pay range of $19.27 to $29.39 per hour, aligning with the department's commitment to attracting skilled labor to maintain and improve city infrastructure effectively. Work locations are based at District I headquarters located at 2400 NE Russell Road and District III at 4725 Coal Mine Road. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., providing a predictable and consistent work routine.

This role involves essential duties such as operating chain and hand saws to cut tree branches and limbs, flagging traffic, operating weed eaters, and clearing debris to maintain clean and safe public spaces. The position also includes participation in the construction and upkeep of streets, bridges, and culverts, along with preparing potholes and depressions for asphalt patching, including handling and applying hot or cold asphalt mixtures. Employees may occasionally operate light to moderately heavy automotive equipment to support installation and repair work. Additionally, the role requires involvement in snow removal and other related maintenance tasks.

Candidates must meet specific requirements such as a high school diploma or equivalent, or six months of relevant general labor experience. A valid state-issued driver's license is necessary, with the department requiring a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to be obtained prior to the end of the probationary period. Successful candidates must also pass pre-employment drug screenings and physical examinations. Military veterans are strongly encouraged to apply, reflecting the department’s respect for disciplined and trained individuals.

Working with the Kansas City Public Works Department comes with a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees' health, financial security, and work-life balance. Benefits include affordable and broad health coverage options such as medical, dental, and vision insurance with low employee contributions. Generous paid time off policies cover vacation, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays, growing with tenure. Secure retirement planning includes a city-funded pension plan and an optional 457 savings plan. Paid parental leave, bereavement leave, tuition assistance, disability coverage, city-paid life insurance, and community volunteer leave provide additional support and opportunities to maintain personal well-being and community engagement.

The application process is competitive and deadline-driven, with an emphasis on providing complete and detailed resumes or applications that outline how candidates meet the minimum qualifications. The City of Kansas City is committed to diversity, inclusion, and providing reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities. This opportunity not only offers a chance to contribute meaningfully to the city's infrastructure but also to grow personally and professionally within a supportive municipal workforce.
