Job Description
Balfour Beatty Communities is a leading real estate company dedicated to delivering quality residential communities that people are proud to call home. With a deep commitment to creating exceptional living experiences, Balfour Beatty Communities prioritizes care—care for residents, partners, communities, and employees alike. This culture of caring informs every aspect of the company’s operations, driving a mission to always do the right thing, foster meaningful connections, and meet the needs of their residents and partners with sincerity, empathy, and creativity. As a part of Balfour Beatty Investments and Balfour Beatty, plc, an international group that specializes in financing, developing, building, and maintaining infrastructure assets, Balfour Beatty Communities contributes to a legacy of excellence and innovation in real estate management.
The Maintenance Technician role at Balfour Beatty Communities is integral to maintaining this mission by ensuring the physical condition of the community remains impeccable while providing world-class service to residents. This position involves diagnosing maintenance issues, performing necessary repairs, and promptly addressing resident service requests to uphold a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environment. This role is vital not only in executing routine maintenance duties but also in enhancing overall resident satisfaction through professionalism and timely responses.
The Maintenance Technician job family at Balfour Beatty Communities offers a structured career path designed to attract, retain, and develop maintenance talent. It consists of multiple levels, including Maintenance Trainee, Maintenance Technician I, II, and III, each with specific responsibilities, requirements, and training plans to support career progression. This framework enables employees to grow their skills and advance within the company while ensuring their work aligns with best practices and company standards.
Typical responsibilities of the role include overseeing one or more community assets, supervising general maintenance engineers and technicians, and handling property maintenance tasks focused on HVAC, mechanical, electrical, utilities, and lighting systems. The technician is also responsible for inspections, repairs, managing inventory of parts and equipment, coordinating contractor activities, and ensuring compliance with company safety and environmental policies. The role demands the ability to work within a rotating on-call schedule to provide 24/7 maintenance coverage, ensuring that resident needs are met at any time.
Candidates suited for this position typically possess a high school diploma or GED and several years of maintenance experience, complemented by certifications or licenses in fields such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, appliance repair, or carpentry. Strong customer service skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capability to diagnose and repair maintenance problems independently are essential. The physical demands of the job require the ability to frequently stand, climb, lift heavy equipment, and manipulate tools and machinery.
Balfour Beatty Communities offers a competitive benefits package that includes discretionary bonuses, comprehensive medical and dental insurance, health spending accounts, company-paid life insurance, a 401K plan with employer matching, generous paid time off including sick and personal days, volunteer days, and disability and parental leave benefits. This makes the Maintenance Technician position not only a fulfilling career opportunity but also one supported by a strong commitment to employee well-being and development.
