The Maintenance Team Leader at Whole Foods Market plays a pivotal role at the company’s metro food production facility. This is a leadership position responsible for managing and supervising the maintenance team, ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of manufacturing equipment and the facility itself. The role involves overseeing daily maintenance operations, scheduling preventive maintenance, diagnosing equipment malfunctions, and implementing repair strategies to minimize production downtime. The Maintenance Team Leader is also tasked with adhering to stringent safety policies and regulatory compliance, including USDA standards and OSHA regulations, to maintain food safety and equipment safety. In addition, this position requires collaboration with various departments and external contractors to ensure efficient maintenance practices and effective budget management.

Job Requirements

  • Education level of BA/BS degree or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of maintenance experience in food manufacturing
  • At least 12 months of supervisory experience in a food manufacturing environment
  • OSHA safety certification or relevant safety training
  • Ability to plan and manage maintenance projects
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and hydraulic systems
  • Proficiency in reading technical documentation and repair manuals
  • Experience with managing external contractors and service providers
  • Familiarity with CMMS and maintenance software
  • Intermediate computer skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Physical ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Adherence to company dress code and personal protective equipment
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Willingness to work in wet and dry conditions and exposure to cleaning chemicals
  • May require use of ladders

Job Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2+ years of maintenance experience in food manufacturing
  • 12+ months of maintenance supervisory experience in food manufacturing
  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) or Certified Plant Maintenance Manager (CPMM) preferred
  • OSHA safety certification or relevant safety training
  • Ability to plan, execute, and oversee maintenance projects
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, blueprints, and safety rules
  • Experience managing relationships with contractors and service providers
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Basic understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) processes
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Flexible work schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with stakeholders

Job Duties

  • Lead the daily operations of the maintenance team including assigning tasks and providing guidance
  • Complete maintenance logs and documentation required for food safety and equipment safety
  • Ensure compliance with USDA manufacturing facility safety and regulatory standards
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and determine repair strategies
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all equipment
  • Ensure checklists are followed including inspection of drives, motors, belts, fluid levels, and filter replacements
  • Organize and schedule maintenance activities to minimize production downtime
  • Assist in preparing and managing maintenance budgets including cost estimates
  • Follow safety policies including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures
  • Manage inventory of maintenance supplies, spare parts, and tools
  • Maintain building safety and security standards and comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
  • Interview, select, train, develop, counsel, and manage performance of the maintenance team
  • Collaborate on team member relations including documentation, investigations, and corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, USDA, HACCP, FSMA, ADA, FDA, and other relevant regulations
  • Build a positive work environment focused on teamwork and mutual respect
