Serving both commercial and government marine sectors, Southwest Shipyard operates four strategically located shipyards in South Texas, offering direct deep-water access to the Gulf of Mexico. This unique positioning allows it to efficiently serve a diverse array of clients within the marine industry. The company's commitment to quality, safety, and environmental excellence reflects in its core motto: "Faster, Safer, Better." With a dedicated and experienced workforce, Southwest Shipyard stands out as a reliable and innovative partner in marine vessel maintenance and construction.
The Maintenance Mechanic role at Southwest Shipyard is a vital position responsible for ensuring the upkeep and optimal functioning of buildings and mechanical systems across the shipyards. This role includes hands-on repair, maintenance, and installation of system components along with troubleshooting and facility maintenance duties. Maintenance Mechanics are expected to handle large production machines and heavy equipment, which requires technical expertise and a strong safety awareness. A significant aspect of this role involves performing emergency repairs promptly and efficiently to minimize operational downtime.
This position works on a day shift schedule from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, with requirements for overtime and weekend availability as needed to meet business demands. Employees are based primarily at the Brady Island location in Houston, Texas, but must be willing to travel to other sites, including Channelview and Galveston, requiring a valid driver's license. The company offers a competitive salary package and comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k)/retirement savings plan, paid time off, holidays, and career development opportunities.
Maintenance Mechanics at Southwest Shipyard play a critical role in maintaining and servicing various equipment such as pumps (including vacuum and submersible pumps), compressors, welding machines, heavy equipment, generators, motors, cranes, and flares. Daily duties involve preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, operating powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms, and bridge cranes, and ensuring all tools and equipment are properly maintained and stocked. The role demands accurate measurements and documentation, adherence to quality standards and safety regulations, and cooperation with yard and vendor personnel to effectively address maintenance needs.
Qualified candidates typically have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and at least five years of experience in industrial or manufacturing maintenance. Proficiency in English is required, with bilingual English-Spanish preferred. Candidates should exhibit technical aptitude, basic computer skills, and experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Forklift operation experience and certification are highly desirable. Additionally, candidates must be capable of effectively communicating and managing multiple tasks with attention to detail and quality, functioning as self-starters with the ability to work independently. Physical and mental requirements include the ability to perform strenuous physical activities, wearing personal protective equipment, and adapting to various environmental conditions prevalent in shipyard operations.
Southwest Shipyard, LP is firmly committed to providing a safe and inclusive workplace, reflected in its equal opportunity employment practices. The company is an E-Verify participant and strongly enforces workplace safety policies to maintain its high standards. Employment is at-will, and the company maintains rigorous standards to ensure employees meet safety and quality expectations, supporting career growth within an environment dedicated to faster, safer, and better service delivery.
