Job Description
Traveling Mercies is a distinguished cocktail, wine, and oyster bar founded by James Beard Award-winning chef Caroline Glover. Known for its innovative approach to raw bar favorites, such as oysters and shrimp cocktails, it also offers comfort food classics including wedge salads and rice pudding. The establishment’s drink offerings are refined and intentional, highlighting the versatility of rum along with a collection of lesser-known classic cocktails. Their wine selection is carefully curated to feature coastally influenced wines rich in acidity and salinity, perfectly complementing their seafood-centric menu. In 2024, Traveling Mercies earned significant recognition as a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best New Bar Award and was named one of Esquire Magazine's Best Bars in America, underscoring its reputation for excellence in both food and beverage service.
The role of a Shucker and Guest Services Staff at Traveling Mercies is a dynamic and engaging position that goes beyond typical kitchen responsibilities. In addition to shucking oysters, you will be actively involved in prepping the area and engaging with guests throughout your shift. This customer-facing role demands versatility and a strong team spirit, as on slower nights, you will assist with running food, taking orders, and supporting the bartender on duty. The job schedule consists of a four-day workweek, usually granting Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off, although days off may vary due to requests from other team members. Shifts run from 2 pm to 10 pm on weekdays and extend to 2 pm to 11 pm on weekends.
This position offers an excellent earning potential, with pay plus tips averaging between 30 and 40 dollars per hour, thanks to an equal tip-sharing system among all hourly employees, including both front-of-house and back-of-house staff. This equitable tip distribution promotes a positive and collaborative work environment. Full-time employees become eligible for health, dental, and vision insurance subsidies after just three months. Additional benefits include dining discounts, ongoing wine and spirits training, and convenient free parking. This thoughtfully structured compensation and benefits package reflects Traveling Mercies’ commitment to fostering a supportive and rewarding workplace for all team members.
