The role available is for a full-time Cook at University Senior Living located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This position offers a competitive starting wage ranging from $20.00 to $22.00 per hour and involves working a scheduled shift from Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 am to 7:30 pm. As a Cook, the candidate will become an integral part of the culinary team, contributing to the preparation and presentation of high-quality, attractive menu items according to established standards and recipes. The position is central to ensuring that residents enjoy exceptional meals prepared with attention to taste and appearance. Beyond cooking, the role entails maintaining a clean and sanitary environment adhering strictly to health protocols, including food safety and hygiene practices.

In addition to food preparation, the Cook position includes a unique relational aspect that encourages the candidate to engage with residents to understand their preferences and needs, promoting a truly personalized dining experience. This role requires physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and the ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds. Candidates must be comfortable working near extreme temperature conditions including cooking surfaces and walk-in freezers and must be ready to work both indoors and outdoors for special events. A criminal background clearance and possession of a current Food Handlers Card as specified by the Department of Health are mandatory.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen years of age
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English
  • Active Food Handlers Card as specified per the Department of Health
  • Demonstrated leadership, training, and supervision skills
  • Proficient written and oral communication
  • Active and able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and stoop all day
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds
  • Comfortable working near extreme temperatures including cooking surfaces and walk-in freezers
  • Availability to work indoors and outdoors for events
  • Criminal background clearance required

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a current Food Handlers Card
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and competency in leadership, training, and supervision

Job Duties

  • Prepare all menu items according to established standards and recipes to provide exceptional quality food that is attractively presented in a timely fashion
  • Ensure health protocols are always followed including proper hygiene, sanitary food preparation, and proper food temperatures
  • Familiarize yourself with the residents and their preferences and needs
  • Participate in resident orientations
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dining areas as per regulations
  • Assist in inventory management and ordering supplies
  • Support teamwork and communication among kitchen staff
