Job Description
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), located in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. Renowned for its vast and diverse collection, VMFA houses more than 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history. The museum boasts the largest public collection of Faberge outside Russia, the finest Art Nouveau collection outside Paris, and one of the nation's most esteemed collections of American art. Additional highlights include prized collections of Chinese art, English silver, French Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, British sporting art, modern and contemporary art, and celebrated South Asian, Himalayan, and African art. VMFA is recognized as the 11th-best art museum in the United States by The Washington Post and is the only US art museum open 365 days a year with free general admission. It operates as a state-supported, privately endowed educational institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting art to enrich the lives of the citizens of Virginia and beyond.
The Food Services Department at VMFA enhances visitor experiences by providing exceptional dining options. The Best Café, situated off the Cochrane Atrium, offers casual cuisine with local flavors in a spacious, light-filled setting. The menu features seasonal and exhibition-inspired selections such as sandwiches, soups, salads, pizza, and more. The department also manages Special Events catering to weddings, corporate receptions, holiday parties, and nonprofit functions, accommodating up to 2,500 guests across the museum. The culinary team at Best Café and Special Events is passionate and dedicated to delivering outstanding food and service that contribute to memorable occasions.
The Line Cook position is a vital role within the Food Services Department. This hourly wage role offers employment with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts at a competitive pay rate starting at $17.00 per hour. Reporting to the Events Executive Chef, the Line Cook is responsible for preparing food according to the chef's specifications and supporting kitchen operations in both the Best Café and Special Events kitchens. The role requires working independently and collaboratively to handle prep work, line cooking duties, and maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe kitchen environment. The position demands flexibility to assist with various culinary tasks, including preparing food for other museum dining venues such as Amuse and Floris when directed. The Line Cook also helps with kitchen projects, inventories, deliveries, and equipment maintenance.
This opportunity is ideal for motivated, team-centric individuals who thrive in fast-paced, high-volume settings and are passionate about food service and culinary arts. The role offers a professional and mission-driven work environment with flexible scheduling options, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Joining the VMFA Food Services Department provides a unique chance to be part of a respected cultural institution that values professionalism, inclusivity, and community engagement. Employees benefit from free admission to special exhibitions, previews, employee pricing for certain museum programs, and discounts at museum dining and retail locations. Those who join this team will find a supportive workplace culture and opportunities for growth and learning within a prestigious institution dedicated to enriching lives through art and culture.
