Job Description
Silver Diner Development LLC is a renowned leader in the casual dining segment, known for its commitment to fresh, locally sourced ingredients and a warm, friendly atmosphere. Recognized by the Washington Post as one of the 'Most Diverse Places to Work' and featured in Full Service Restaurant Magazine's '20 Full Service Restaurants to Watch,' Silver Diner has earned numerous accolades including the 2020 TDn2K Best Practices Award for the Family Dining Category. The company bridges the gap between traditional tablecloth restaurants and typical fast food by offering a menu that is fresh, local, and flexible, featuring surprising healthy options. Silver Diner partners directly with over 15 local farms that prioritize organic and sustainable farming practices, ensuring the highest quality in every dish served. With a strong culture that puts people first, Silver Diner invests heavily in its team members, promoting from within and offering clear career paths that foster professional growth and personal achievement. The company’s mission, "TO BE THE BEST WE CAN BE!" reflects its dedication to excellence in people, product, guests, and growth.
The role of Line Cook at Silver Diner is a critical position within the kitchen, meant for individuals passionate about hospitality and culinary arts. These cooks are essential to delivering the company's fresh and vibrant menu that has been created by award-winning Executive Chef Ype Von Hengst. As part of the team, line cooks begin their journey with immediate training in one of the designated training stores in Alexandria or Ballston, VA. This preparation includes learning every station in the kitchen, understanding flavor profiles, current food trends, and the standards expected at Silver Diner. Line cooks play a hands-on role in preparing and/or directing the preparation of menu items while following strict sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards. The position requires adherence to detailed specifications for every dish, careful ingredient stocking, temperature checks, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in their workstations.
The opportunity extends beyond preparation duties; Silver Diner champions career development through its well-established hat development program, providing a clear ladder for growth within the culinary team. Employees are encouraged to develop new skills, gain promotions to trainer, supervisor, or manager positions, making this more than just a job—it’s a promising career pathway. This role requires flexibility to work during weekends and holidays and demands a high level of physical stamina to manage the intense environment involving handling hot equipment, lifting heavy boxes, and long hours on hard surfaces. The company emphasizes a contagious friendliness and energetic spirit among its kitchen staff to maintain a positive, team-oriented atmosphere.
Silver Diner also offers comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with a 401K plan and Employee Assistance Program. Additional perks like meal discounts, gym membership discounts, work shoe discounts, and referral bonus programs create a supportive environment that values its people. With over 60% of managers and 100% of general managers promoted from within, Silver Diner stands out as an employer that truly invests in its employees' success. Those who join the team will be part of one of the busiest restaurant concepts in America, growing alongside a leader in the culinary industry’s hottest segment.
