The role of Line & Grade Instrument Man II at Baker Construction is an essential position that provides expertise and coordination in the use of surveying equipment to ensure effective and accurate project layout. This role requires close collaboration with project leadership including Party Chiefs, Superintendents, and Foremen to establish project controls and precise building locations. The Line & Grade Instrument Man II plays a critical part in managing project accuracy by maintaining physical site dimensions, calculating concrete hold quantities, and resolving tolerance and constructability conflicts. This position also supports effective project communication, documentation, and safety protocols. Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 4 years construction experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years experience as Line & Grade Instrument Man I
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to calculate figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Understanding of geometry and trigonometry
  • Knowledge of industry tolerances
  • Working knowledge of coordinate system
  • Ability to work harmoniously and respectfully with subordinates, peers, supervisors, and clients
  • Team player who provides information, resolves conflict, and provides feedback
  • Ability to direct work

Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years experience as Line & Grade Instrument Man I
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Understanding of geometry and trigonometry
  • Knowledge of industry tolerances
  • Working knowledge of coordinate systems
  • Ability to work well with team members and clients
  • Team player with conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to direct work

Job Duties

  • Maintain all physical site dimensions and controls accurately
  • Layout building location, structures, and dimensions throughout the project accurately
  • Assist in establishing procedures and coordinating with client to define primary survey points and transfer building control
  • Establish secondary control and communicate procedures to individual work crews
  • Provide required data to Party Chief for data collection
  • Calculate and monitor concrete hold quantities daily
  • Maintain communication with Party Chief, Superintendent, Foremen, and trades to coordinate project layout
