Job Description

The YMCA of Greenville is a dynamic and rapidly growing nonprofit association dedicated to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As part of a globally respected organization, the YMCA works tirelessly to build a sense of belonging, nurture individual potential, and foster hope and determination among its members and the broader community. This vibrant community center offers a welcoming environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities come together to pursue personal growth, wellness, and social connection. YMCA of Greenville is committed to creating opportunities that empower everyone to become the best version of themselves while supporting the health and well-being of the community they serve.

This employment opportunity is for the position of Lifeguard, a critical role supporting the YMCA's mission by ensuring the safety of all patrons who use the aquatic facilities. The Lifeguard position is a part-time role designed for those who want to contribute to their community while gaining valuable work experience. This job offers competitive benefits for part-time staff, including instant access to earned wages, free individual YMCA membership, discounts on upgraded memberships and programs such as childcare, personal training, sports, and aquatics, as well as a retirement savings plan with a 12% employer contribution upon full vesting. Additionally, the YMCA is "First Job Friendly," providing free lifeguard certification for staff to help develop skills and support career growth.

As a Lifeguard at the YMCA of Greenville, you will be responsible for creating a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. You will actively monitor the pool, deck, and surrounding areas to maintain safe swimming conditions while enforcing YMCA policies and procedures. This role requires vigilance, quick decision-making, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations, including administering first aid, CPR, and rescue procedures when needed. Lifeguards are expected to maintain active surveillance, remain calm under pressure, and provide excellent customer service to all members, guests, and program participants.

The YMCA of Greenville is a place where inclusivity and respect thrive. The organizational culture emphasizes being welcoming — open to all, genuine — embracing individuality, hopeful — believing in the potential of every person, nurturing — supporting personal development, and determined — relentlessly working to make the community stronger. Working in this role means being part of a team that values these core principles and strives to make a positive impact every day.

Lifeguards at the YMCA are expected to uphold safety rules diligently and know how to perform all emergency procedures confidently. You will attend required training sessions and meetings to continually improve your skills and stay updated on safety standards. Your role will also include adhering to all policies related to boundary maintenance with consumers, managing high-risk activities, and following mandated reporting and abuse risk management requirements.

If you are at least 15 years old, have or are willing to obtain certification including Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED, and possess the ability to communicate safety rules effectively, this position offers a supportive environment to grow personally and professionally. The YMCA of Greenville also provides free Lifeguard Certification courses, which helps staff meet the qualification requirements and advance their skills. This position is a perfect fit for individuals who want to work in a mission-driven environment, prioritize safety, and enjoy making a meaningful difference in the lives of community members.
