The Appleton Public Library is currently seeking a reliable and detail-oriented individual to join as a Library Assistant - Public Services (Substitute) within the Materials Management division. This position supports key operations such as shifting and sorting materials, inspecting the condition of returned media, and assisting with the management of carts used for materials' transportation.

Supervised by section assistant and section supervisors, the Library Assistant works collaboratively within the team to uphold library policies and contribute to special projects, such as major shifting of materials or detailed shelf reading. The position demands physical agility, including the ability to reach various shelving heights, lift up to 50 pounds, and push loaded book carts weighing up to 300 pounds. The Library Assistant is expected to communicate courteously with the public, refer inquiries appropriately, and continually update their knowledge of library procedures and policies through ongoing training sessions.

Job Requirements

  • At least two years of high school education or equivalent experience and training
  • Ability to reach shelving within a height range of three to 75 inches
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and push a loaded book cart weighing up to 300 pounds on carpeting
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, stand, bend, reach, or walk for most of the work shift
  • Ability to use hands, wrists, and arms throughout the work shift
  • Ability to stand up quickly from kneeling or sitting position on the floor
  • Ability to communicate with tact and courtesy

Job Duties

  • Reshelve materials
  • Maintain proper and neat arrangements of library materials on shelves
  • Cleanup materials from throughout the library
  • Handle materials from tubs to conveyor and sorting bins onto carts
  • Put carts of materials in alpha/numeric order
  • Shift materials among shelves
  • Gather materials to fill reserves
  • Process holds
  • Check the condition of media returned to APL as needed
  • Special projects including major shifting of library materials or shelf reading
  • Refer questions from the public to service desks appropriately
  • Attend training and staff meetings
  • Keep current on library policies and procedures
