Job Description

San Bernardino County Library is a vital public institution dedicated to providing residents across the County with access to a diverse collection of materials, educational programs, and community resources. As part of one of the largest library systems in California, the San Bernardino County Library strives to enhance the quality of life through literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement. The system includes numerous branch libraries that offer varied services tailored to meet the unique needs of their local communities. With a commitment to innovation and accessibility, the Library constantly seeks to improve its service delivery and operational efficiency to serve its patrons better.

The San Bernardino County Library is currently recruiting for a Library Delivery Driver to support the transportation and distribution of library materials, supplies, equipment, and program resources throughout its extensive network. This role is critical in ensuring that branch libraries receive timely deliveries necessary to maintain seamless public library operations. The position offers the opportunity to work independently within a supportive team environment while directly contributing to community access to educational and cultural resources.

As a Library Delivery Driver, incumbents will primarily operate County vehicles along pre-assigned routes and schedules, supporting the logistics needed to keep the library system running effectively. This involves loading and unloading materials such as books, craft supplies, program equipment, and other resources to various branches while ensuring items remain secure and undamaged during transport. Additional responsibilities include vehicle inspections, maintaining delivery and mileage records, managing inventory documentation, and assisting with warehouse duties that involve organization, shelving, and order fulfillment.

This position demands a high degree of professionalism, safety awareness, and excellent customer service skills as incumbents will regularly interact with library staff, vendors, and members of the public. The delivery driver must also use County-issued communication devices to maintain effective schedules, respond to unexpected challenges like delays or emergencies, and coordinate relevant maintenance activities for fleet vehicles.

Physical activity is a significant part of the role; incumbents must be capable of moving, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 70 pounds, either manually or with carts and dollies. Candidates will also be expected to comply with County policies, including undergoing a background check, fingerprinting, drug screening, and job-related physical examination as part of the pre-employment process.

The role is classified officially as a Library Assistant and includes excellent employee benefits under the County's General Unit MOU, covering a variety of health, dental, and other employee support programs. Candidates must hold a valid California Class C driver's license and carry current automobile liability insurance. Experience with delivery driving routes, material handling, and inventory management is essential, though public transportation and app-based food delivery experience do not qualify.

San Bernardino County Library is an equal employment opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, providing reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. Employees in this role play an essential part in promoting literacy and community development by ensuring that vital library resources are efficiently transported and readily available across the County's public library network. This is an outstanding opportunity for motivated individuals who seek a meaningful position combining practical logistics work with public service in a dynamic community environment.
