Job Description
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the state's only academic health sciences center and is nationally recognized for its leadership in medical research, education, and high-quality patient care. Established as a vital part of the University of Mississippi, UMMC serves as a critical hub for healthcare in Mississippi, training healthcare professionals and advancing medical knowledge through cutting-edge research and innovative educational programs. UMMC encompasses multiple colleges including medicine, nursing, health professions, dentistry, and pharmacy, ensuring a comprehensive approach to health sciences education and healthcare delivery. The Medical Center is dedicated to creating an environment that fosters collaboration, continuous learning, and evidence-based practice to improve health outcomes across diverse populations.
The Librarian - Collections & Scholarly Resource Strategies position at UMMC plays a pivotal role in supporting the academic and research efforts within this vibrant health sciences community. This full-time, salaried role within Academic Information Services is based at the Main Campus in Jackson and requires a master's degree in library science or library and information science, alongside at least two years of library experience in academic, health sciences, or research library settings. The librarian is responsible for providing expert information services to a diverse user base comprising physicians, researchers, students, and clinical staff. The role centers on facilitating effective research, learning, and reference support by managing extensive collections and digital resources, advancing information literacy, and promoting the use of evidence-based practice principles.
Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting advanced literature searches to support clinical care, education, and medical research activities; developing and executing search strategies for systematic reviews; and providing training and instruction on the use of biomedical databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. The librarian also helps synthesize complex research inquiries and supports research activities with citation management tools like EndNote and Zotero, ensuring that faculty and clinicians have timely and accurate access to the information needed to make informed decisions.
In addition to technical skills, this role demands strong collaborative abilities to work effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, facilitating evidence-based clinical decision-making and scholarly research. The librarian contributes to the ongoing development and enhancement of library services, instructional materials, and outreach programs aimed at maximizing resource utilization and promoting knowledge discovery. The environment requires physical stamina for occasional handling of equipment, walking, and other physical activities necessary to fulfill the role's requirements.
This position offers a unique opportunity for library professionals passionate about supporting healthcare education and medical research within an academic medical center. UMMC provides a dynamic atmosphere where innovation, collaboration, and service intersect to advance the frontiers of health sciences and improve community health. Applicants are expected to submit a comprehensive application including employment history, educational background, and any licenses or certifications prior to the recruitment closing date. The application process is competitive and prioritizes candidates who meet all job requirements at the time of submission. The university emphasizes fair hiring practices and equal opportunity, inviting qualified individuals to join their mission to enhance health through education, research, and clinical excellence.
