Job Description

Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) is a local government organization dedicated to providing quality services to the residents and visitors of Athens and Clarke County, Georgia. The Leisure Services Department within ACCGov plays a vital role in enhancing the community's quality of life by offering diverse recreational programs, maintaining parks and facilities, and coordinating special events. The Leisure Services Department is currently seeking a Marketing and Communications Specialist to strategically promote its services. This full-time, exempt position (pay grade 119) is responsible for planning, developing, and executing comprehensive marketing, communication, and promotional activities. The role requires creativity and technical expertise in both digital and print media, including social media management, website content updates, and graphic design. The specialist will create visual and written content to enhance the visibility and accessibility of the department's parks, programs, and events.

This position reports to the Director or Assistant Director of the Leisure Services Department and requires successful completion of a six-month probationary period. The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility needed for evening and weekend events, meetings, and special programs. The role demands responsibility for managing online engagement tools, coordinating media relations, and overseeing the department’s digital asset library. The specialist will also collaborate closely with staff and interns, provide communication-related training, and ensure adherence to branding guidelines for all public-facing materials.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, journalism, photography, design, communications, information technology, digital media, marketing, or related fields, combined with at least three years of relevant experience. Proficiency in graphic design software such as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is essential. A valid driver’s license and certifications in First Aid/CPR and National Incident Management System (NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800) within 12 months of hire are required. One year of supervisory experience is preferred. This role involves interaction across multiple government departments and with the public, demanding excellent communication skills, creativity, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information professionally.

Successful candidates will have a strong understanding of marketing principles, public relations, and social media best practices. They must be capable of managing complex projects, analyzing data trends to improve communications strategy, and adapting to changing environments and community needs. Physical demands include occasional lifting and using various office and media equipment. Job Duties

  • designs, develops, and implements comprehensive marketing, communication, and outreach strategies to promote department parks, facilities, programs, events, and services
  • creates, edits, and evaluates marketing materials including digital graphics, photographs, videos, print collateral, advertisements, signage, and branded assets
  • develops, updates, and maintains departmental website content and social media platforms ensuring accuracy, accessibility, consistency, and timely communication
  • monitors social media and online engagement tools, collects and analyzes performance metrics, prepares reports and recommends improvements based on trends
  • identifies appropriate marketing channels and target audiences, tailor campaigns and content to maximize reach and engagement across diverse communities
  • coordinates media relations for departmental activities including feature stories, interviews, announcements, and photo opportunities
  • develops, updates, and implements the department's marketing and communications plan including branding guidelines and communication standards
