Job Description
Subway Headquarters is a leading global franchisor that supports a vast network of over 35,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries worldwide. As one of the largest restaurant businesses on earth, Subway continually innovates to drive franchisee profitability, strengthen its globally recognized brand, and create long-term value for its stakeholders. The company values a dynamic and entrepreneurial work environment where employees act like owners, make impactful decisions, and contribute to meaningful progress. Subway’s culture emphasizes teamwork, accountability, and a bias for action, fostering an atmosphere where colleagues support one another, celebrate achievements, and continuously strive to improve. This environment attracts professionals who are passionate about making a real difference and contributing to the future of the business.
The role of Lead Software Engineer, Menu Platform at Subway’s Franchise World Headquarters presents a compelling opportunity to lead the technological evolution of a critical component that sits at the heart of Subway’s operations—the menu platform. The menu platform influences every promotion, price, and order, across a variety of digital and in-store channels. This platform handles billions of sales and supports an intricate network of franchisees globally, making it a system of enormous scale and strategic importance. The current initiative involves a foundational rebuild of the platform, emphasizing modernization and future-proofing for the coming decade.
As the Lead Software Engineer, this is a hands-on leadership position focusing on technical and architectural direction rather than people management. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in shaping the architecture, driving technical strategy, and setting key design decisions for the menu platform. A significant portion of the role involves writing and reviewing code, collaborating with engineers daily, and making sure that the team’s deliverables align with business priorities. This role demands an individual who thrives not only on coding and problem-solving but also on lifting the capabilities of their peers through mentorship and technical guidance.
The menu platform re-architecture includes migrating and modernizing legacy systems based on C# and SQL Server towards a robust TypeScript stack, maximizing scalability and maintainability. Moreover, the Lead Software Engineer will spearhead efforts to incorporate cutting-edge technologies, including the strategic use of AI to enhance development cycles and automated menu validation in production. The role is critical in determining how AI tools are integrated to streamline build processes and elevate the system’s intelligence and reliability.
Subway offers a unique balance of operational impact and technological innovation within a global restaurant industry. The base pay range for this role is $138,300 to $172,900 annually, recognizing industry experience, skills, education, and geographic location. This opportunity is ideal for software engineers who have a blend of advanced technical skills, architectural expertise, and leadership experience and want to shape the technology backbone of a major international brand. Subway is committed to equal opportunity and considers applicants authorized to work in the country of employment only.
