The role of a Pastry Chef and Cake Decorator at Harmons is a vital position within the bakery team, designed for individuals passionate about baking and creating visually appealing, high-quality pastries and cakes. This full-time position offers hourly wages ranging from $17.99 to $21.42, reflecting the important expertise and skill required. The Pastry Chef and Cake Decorator will be responsible not only for hands-on baking and decorating but also for training and mentoring fellow associates, overseeing product quality and inventory, and ensuring that the bakery operates efficiently according to company standards.
In this role, the individual will prepare, cook, mix, bake, assemble, package, label, and decorate a variety of pastries and cakes. They will also manage stock levels, order necessary ingredients, and ensure compliance with hygiene and safety protocols to maintain a clean and sanitary bakery environment. The Pastry Chef and Cake Decorator will work collaboratively with store management, the bakery team, and merchandising staff to uphold store policies, pricing accuracy, and product freshness. A key part of the job involves providing exceptional customer service by engaging with customers and responding to their needs with professionalism and care.
A significant responsibility includes writing production sheets and schedules for the bakery team, conducting inventory tests, and minimizing waste through efficient ingredient usage and product rotation. The person in this position must possess a keen eye for detail, strong organizational and planning skills, and excellent communication abilities to educate and guide associates effectively. They will serve as a role model and leader within the team, offering honest and constructive feedback to help their colleagues succeed.
Given the nature of the role, candidates should be prepared to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed and must be physically capable of performing tasks that involve standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling various bakery operations. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- one year of bakery experience preferred or any combination of education, experience, and training
- current Food Handler’s Permit
- ability to read and follow a recipe
- basic math skills

Job Qualifications

- ability to read and follow a recipe
- basic math skills used to half or double recipes
- knowledge of mixing, cooking, baking, and assembling procedures and times for pastries
- excellent organization and planning skills
- solid communication skills including verbal and listening skills
- ability to professionally and appropriately handle conflict
- ability to accept constructive review and be accountable for one’s own success and the team's success
- must possess integrity, a positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with a passion for Harmons’ mission

Job Duties
- Follows established departmental and store policies and procedures
- ensures the quality and freshness of all products and services the bakery provides
- responsible for maintaining the appropriate product assortment and inventory levels of all pastry and cake products
- confirms pricing accuracy and signage for all products, paying particular attention to ad items
- ensures the bakery is cleaned and sanitized daily and meets the company standards for appearance
- delivers excellent customer service to all customers
- follows production sheets to ensure appropriate inventory levels of Harmons’ pastries and cakes
- ensures the correct amount of ingredients and supplies are in stock
- minimizes waste by ordering and storing ingredients correctly, being mindful of out-of-code dates, and rotating product
- prepares, cooks, bakes, assembles, and decorates pastries for sale and to keep as back-stock
- bakes and decorates cakes for sale and for custom orders
- makes frosting to be used for cake decorating
- writes production sheets for other Pastry Chefs and Cake Decorators
- assists with test and quarterly inventory
- teaches, mentors, and educates associates to help them be successful members of the team
- provides honest, direct, and constant feedback to Pastry Chefs and Cake Decorators regarding their performance and areas of improvement
- writes the schedule for Pastry Chefs and Cake Decorators
- communicates openly and frequently with Store Director, Bakery Manager, Cake and Pastry Merchandiser, and Director of Fresh Bakery
