Job Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, specifically its Environmental Management Services (EMS) division, located within the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System in Honolulu and Kapolei, Hawaii, is seeking a qualified professional to join their team as a Lead Housekeeping Aid. The VA Medical Center is a federally operated healthcare institution dedicated to providing quality health services and support to veterans, and it is recognized for its commitment to environment of care, safety, and overall facility maintenance. As part of a nationally respected agency, the VA Medical Center plays an essential role in ensuring the well-being of those who have served the United States by maintaining a clean and safe environment across its extensive healthcare facilities. This position is a permanent, full-time role offering a competitive salary range of $21.34 to $24.85 per hour and does not include relocation or recruitment incentives. The job is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and does not offer telework or remote options.

As a Lead Housekeeping Aid, the incumbent will hold a critical supervisory and technical position within the EMS. They will exercise both technical and administrative supervision over subordinate staff to ensure that all housekeeping and environmental hygiene duties are performed efficiently and safely across the medical center. This role requires assigning daily and project-based tasks related to housekeeping, textile distribution, training, environmental safety, and infection control. The individual will be responsible for coordinating work schedules, communicating clearly with staff and other healthcare supervisors, and validating task completions. Supervision also includes providing on-the-job training, enforcing compliance with policies and safety regulations, and offering constructive feedback to improve workforce performance.

The Lead Housekeeping Aid will actively oversee a broad range of cleaning and maintenance duties that contribute to the hospital’s environment of care. These responsibilities include cleaning patient rooms, outpatient clinics, laboratories, sterile areas, isolation rooms, corridors, restrooms, offices, and support spaces. The duties involve dust mopping, damp mopping, waste disposal, replenishment of supplies, washing walls, and ensuring sanitary conditions throughout the premises. The incumbent will also help manage textile distribution and inventory, maintain uniforms, and support patient assistance programs, making this role integral to both facility upkeep and staff operational effectiveness.

This role requires an individual who is physically capable of performing bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and spending significant time standing and walking as part of their regular duties. Manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity are important to perform tasks effectively. The position is eligible for occasional travel and includes a probationary period of one year, during which performance, conduct, and adherence to agency goals will be critically evaluated.

This job offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a federal healthcare agency focused on improving the health outcomes and quality of life of veterans in the Pacific Islands region. The successful candidate will be part of a team that values efficiency, safety, compliance, and teamwork, providing essential housekeeping leadership that enables the VA Medical Center to maintain its high standards of cleanliness and operational readiness.
