Job Description
The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Indianapolis, IN VA Medical Center is an esteemed organization dedicated to providing quality food service to our nation's veterans. Committed to supporting those who have served the country, VCS offers an inclusive and respectful working environment that emphasizes work-life balance and excellent career growth opportunities. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, VCS plays a crucial role in ensuring veterans receive nutritious meals and exceptional service during their visits to the medical center.
The VCS is currently seeking a full-time Lead Food Service Worker who will assume responsibility for managing food service operations and food preparation under the guidance of the Canteen Chief. This role is vital in maintaining the smooth running of the canteen by overseeing food orders, inventory, storage, staff coordination, and strict adherence to sanitation and safety standards. The hourly wage for this position is $21.66, providing a competitive compensation package that reflects the importance of the role.
As a Lead Food Service Worker, you will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills by mentoring and motivating fellow Food Service Workers (FSWs) with enthusiasm and a customer-first approach. The position requires flexibility to cover different food stations to maintain efficient service flow, particularly during employee breaks. Additionally, the role demands meticulous attention to organizing and maintaining food storage areas, conducting regular inventory checks, and ensuring all food items comply with safety, sanitation, and quality standards.
The VCS prides itself on offering comprehensive benefit packages, including child care subsidies, public transportation assistance, annual cost of living adjustments, and robust medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans. Paid vacation, sick leave, federal holidays, and a company retirement savings contribution are also part of the attractive benefits designed to support employees' well-being and financial security.
Working at the VCS involves physical demands such as standing, walking, frequent bending, and the ability to lift or move objects up to 40 pounds unassisted. The working environment may expose employees to both hot and cold food preparation temperatures. A current, valid REAL ID is mandatory for employment, reflecting federal security requirements.
Joining the VCS means stepping into a stable career that values veterans and offers meaningful daily work in a supportive team atmosphere. The position includes a one-year probationary period during which the employee's performance, conduct, and overall contribution to the agency’s goals will be closely evaluated. Continued employment post probation is contingent on an official certification that employment advances the public interest.
In addition, this role requires participation in the Department of Veterans Affairs' seasonal influenza vaccination program as a condition of employment, ensuring the health and safety of all veterans and staff within the medical center.
