Job Description
The Lead Custodian position is offered by a college that prioritizes a safe, clean, and healthy environment for all its building occupants including students, staff, and visitors. This institution is dedicated to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation throughout its campus facilities, which include classrooms, offices, fitness centers, laboratories, furnishings, and exterior walkways. The college values a well-organized and efficient custodial team to support its mission of providing a conducive learning environment. The Lead Custodian is a safety-sensitive and hands-on supervisory role, involving direct management of custodial staff to ensure that quality custodial services meet the department's and college's established guidelines.
The role of Lead Custodian is integral to the operational success of the college's maintenance department. The selected candidate will manage scheduling for custodial employees to accommodate absences, emergencies, and special projects, ensuring that all priority areas receive the necessary attention. Regular quality inspections of custodial work are expected to maintain cleanliness standards, with corrective actions implemented as needed. Leadership development is another key responsibility, requiring the Lead Custodian to instruct staff on the proper use of cleaning materials and equipment, evaluate performance, provide constructive feedback, and participate in hiring and training new employees. This person also manages custodial supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and secure storage to support efficient operations.
Further, the Lead Custodian collaborates closely with the Facilities Management Director by conducting facility inspections to identify repair needs and helping evaluate custodial contracts for quality assurance. Enforcing campus rules and safety protocols is critical given the safety-sensitive nature of this role, which includes issuing warnings for policy violations and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. The position requires physical stamina to perform regular duties involving standing, walking, bending, and lifting, emphasizing safety and ergonomic practices. Employees in this role must also be proficient with computer systems, hold a valid Florida Driver's License for operating utility vehicles, and be able to work in diverse indoor and outdoor environments under varying conditions.
Given its comprehensive supervisory requirements and active involvement in hands-on custodial tasks, the Lead Custodian plays a pivotal role in maintaining the college's facility standards. The position demands strong management and administrative skills for organizing personnel and supplies, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and responding effectively to emergency situations. This role may require flexible working hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. The college provides a robust benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, and paid time off to support the wellbeing of its employees. Overall, the Lead Custodian contributes significantly to the college's operational excellence by leading a motivated custodial team and safeguarding the campus environment.
