This role involves preparing and cooking or baking food items by adhering to established standard practices and procedures that comply with regulatory requirements enforced by federal, state, and HFAP agencies. The Lead Cook/Baker is expected to provide leadership by guiding and directing cooks and bakers within the kitchen. This includes coordinating team meetings, enforcing food safety and sanitation guidelines, and ensuring that meals meet the highest quality in taste and appearance.\n\nThis leadership position requires managing kitchen operations efficiently by overseeing food preparation schedules, handling kitchen equipment such as combi-ovens, slicers, steamers, and mixers properly, and maintaining accurate food temperature records to guarantee safety and quality. The Lead Cook/Baker must be skilled in following production sheets to produce correct food quantities to supply all hospital service areas timely and effectively.\n\nAdditionally, the role involves essential people management responsibilities, such as providing performance feedback, handling disciplinary actions, conducting interviews, and participating in evaluations of team members. Occupational safety and safe food handling practices are stressed throughout the job role, ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards. The availability to work flexible hours, including a rotating schedule from 9:30 am to 5 pm and 12:30 pm to 9 pm, as well as weekend and holiday shifts, demonstrates the dedication required to fulfill the role successfully.\n\nThis position is suitable for individuals who are passionate about food service in a healthcare setting and want to contribute to an organization that values health, wellness, and compassion in all aspects of care. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of institutional cooking experience required
  • At least 1 year experience in food service or cooking preferred
  • Valid Food Handler Certification (ServSafe) required in Illinois
  • Food Handler Certification (ServSafe) preferred in Indiana
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Compliance with federal, state, and HFAP sanitation guidelines

Job Qualifications

  • Preferred High School Diploma/GED
  • 2 years Institutional Cooking required
  • 1 year Food Service and/or Cooking preferred
  • Food Handler Certification - ServSafe while working in Illinois required
  • Food Handler Certification - ServSafe while working in Indiana preferred

Job Duties

  • Coordinates team meetings and participates in meetings with cooks
  • Ensures food products meet quality standards for taste and appearance
  • Ensures proper usage of kitchen equipment including combi-ovens, slicers, steamers, and mixers
  • Follows production sheets, to ensure correct quantities are made and available to all service areas
  • Follows sanitation guidelines of federal, state, and HFAP regulatory agencies
  • Labels and dates food products, according to procedures
  • Meets the schedules and time requirements for food preparation
