Job Description
Rockford Rescue Mission is a faith-based nonprofit organization committed to providing essential services and support to individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Rockford, Illinois community. Established with a mission to bring hope, healing, and restoration through Christ-centered programs, the organization offers meals, shelter, recovery programs, and spiritual guidance to those in need. Rockford Rescue Mission emphasizes holistic care encompassing physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being as part of its comprehensive approach to serving guests and residents. The Mission's dedicated staff and volunteers work collaboratively to create a safe, nurturing environment helping individuals transform their lives and reintegrate into society.
The role of a Cook at Rockford Rescue Mission is vital in delivering nutritious, well-prepared meals to guests and residents while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization within the food service area. This position requires a combination of culinary skill, attention to health and safety guidelines, and a servant’s heart to support the Mission’s broader spiritual objectives. The Cook prepares meals that meet the dietary needs of the population served while working closely with the Food Service Supervisor to contribute ideas for menu planning and ensure compliance with health regulations.
In addition to cooking duties, the Cook oversees the cleanliness and maintenance of the kitchen and food service equipment, ensuring all surfaces, especially stainless steels, are sanitized correctly following strict chore guidelines. The Cook also plays a leadership role by directing volunteers and recovery residents to assist with kitchen tasks, encouraging teamwork and efficiency. This role requires adherence to dress codes, safe food handling practices, and a commitment to Rockford Rescue Mission’s spiritual responsibilities, including sharing the gospel, supporting spiritual development among staff and guests, and actively participating in spiritual growth activities.
The Cook represents the Mission in all interactions with visitors and donors, demonstrating Christlike character and gratitude. This full-time position demands physical stamina to handle lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods within a dynamic kitchen environment. The ideal candidate will hold a high school diploma or GED, formal culinary training, and a valid food sanitation certificate. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a faith-driven environment dedicated to serving some of the most vulnerable members of the community, combining culinary expertise with a deep commitment to spiritual service and community building.
