Job Description
The hiring organization is the Houston Food Bank, a leading nonprofit dedicated to ending hunger through innovative programs, community partnerships, and food distribution. Serving an 18-county area, the Houston Food Bank operates multiple facilities including Kids Café, Texans Café, and 535 Catering, all focused on providing nutritious meals to vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and families in need. Known for its commitment to serving the community with integrity and transparency, the organization embodies core values summarized as Purpose, Accountability, Courage, and Transparency. These values guide every aspect of its operations, from food sourcing to meal production and delivery.
The position being offered is that of a Lead Cook, a vital role within the kitchen operations at Houston Food Bank facilities such as Kids Café or Texans Café/535 Catering. This position is responsible for assisting in daily food production, ensuring that high-quality meals are prepared following strict food safety and portion control standards. The Lead Cook plays a key role in coordinating meal plans and organizing kitchen workflows to maintain efficiency and reduce waste. Additionally, this role includes communication and collaboration with other kitchen staff, volunteers, and delivery drivers to ensure smooth operations. The Lead Cook must comply with state and local food safety regulations including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) procedures.
This is a position that requires flexibility in scheduling, with work hours ranging from early morning (5am) to late evening (10pm), including shifts during nights, weekends, and holidays. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to meet business needs and support meal service schedules. While there are no direct supervisory responsibilities, the Lead Cook supports and assists cooks, volunteers, and student workers in daily kitchen tasks. This role demands attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations in fast-paced environments.
Candidates applying for this position should possess a high school diploma or GED, have at least three years of experience in institutional or full-service food production, and hold a valid Food Handlers certificate. SERV Safe certification is preferred or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. The Lead Cook must be comfortable using basic computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook for communication and record-keeping. Physical demands include frequent standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasional travel within the service area. The work environment may include exposure to wet or humid conditions, food odors, and varying noise levels common in kitchen and warehouse settings.
Overall, this Lead Cook role at Houston Food Bank provides an opportunity to contribute to a meaningful mission while utilizing culinary skills in a dynamic, community-focused nonprofit environment. The organization fosters a culture of learning, integrity, and customer focus that supports employees in their professional development and encourages a strong commitment to serving those in need. If you are passionate about food service, community impact, and teamwork, this position may be an excellent fit for your career goals.
