The Full-Time Cook position at Lowell General Hospital is an opportunity to become part of a dedicated team that upholds the highest standards of food services within the healthcare setting. Reporting under general supervision, this role involves preparing a variety of hot and cold food items for staff, visitors, and patients across multiple meal periods including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special events like catering. The cook ensures that all meals are prepared accurately concerning quantity, quality, appearance, and safety standards following the hospital’s guidelines and HACCP principles.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in food production areas such as patient services, retail, and catering. The position requires proficiency in cooking, portioning, and presenting meals using standardized recipes and production sheets. The individual will be responsible for operating kitchen equipment, preparing ingredients by washing, peeling, cutting, and trimming, and ensuring compliance with infection control standards through proper hygiene practices like wearing hairnets and gloves.

This role goes beyond cooking to include inventory management, food storage and labeling compliance, maintaining food quality, cleaning and sanitation of work areas, and assisting in supervising kitchen staff. The cook will contribute to a positive team environment while coordinating with management on food usage and menu planning. Additionally, the cook assists with opening and closing kitchen procedures, enforces safety protocols, and handles routine manual tasks such as stocking and cleaning.

Job Requirements

  • Two years of related experience in a food services environment or restaurant
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts including early mornings evenings weekends and holidays
  • Ability to adhere to food safety regulations and hygiene practices
  • Capability to perform physical tasks such as lifting and standing for extended periods
  • Attention to detail in food preparation and presentation
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of food handling and sanitation standards

Job Qualifications

  • Associates degree in culinary arts cooking or similar area of study
  • Three years of experience as a cook in food services or restaurant
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • ServSafe certification
  • Ability to follow HACCP food production and safety standards
  • Experience with kitchen equipment and food preparation techniques
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities

Job Duties

  • Following the menu prepares and cooks food for all regular and modified diet meals assuring quantity quality and timeliness of the meals according to designated recipes and daily production sheets
  • Practices accepted HACCP food production and food handling principles utilizes hairnet gloves apron etc to optimize infection control and cleanliness per regulations
  • Reviews menus and prepares any food items that can be prepared in advance and stores appropriately
  • Follows basic recipes and/or product directions for preparing seasoning cooking tasting carving and serving soups meats vegetables desserts and other food items
  • Prepares foods by operating a variety of kitchen equipment to measure and mix ingredients washing peeling cutting and shredding fruits and vegetables and trimming and cutting meat poultry or fish
  • Tastes products reads menus estimates food requirements checks production and keeps records for planning accurate production and requisitioning of supplies and equipment
  • Opens and closes kitchen and ensures uninterrupted supply of food planning ahead for substitutions in consultation with leadership
