Job Description
Buffalo City Mission, located in Buffalo, NY, is a nonprofit organization deeply rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, dedicated to offering hope, dignity, and support to men, women, and families facing significant barriers to stability. As a faith-based community, Buffalo City Mission functions more than just as a workplace; it is a compassionate environment where service is a calling and faith inspires meaningful action. The Mission is committed to transforming lives, providing not only shelter but also vital resources and opportunities for personal growth and rebuilding a new life. This transformative effort is anchored in the belief that everyone deserves a second chance and the power of grace, love, and hope to heal and restore lives.
The Lead Chef position at Buffalo City Mission is a full-time role based at the men’s shelter, offering a competitive hourly wage ranging from $19.00 to $20.00. The work schedule includes Monday through Wednesday from 10 AM to 6 PM and Friday and Saturday from 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This role is critical for ensuring that nutritious and healthy meals are prepared and served with care, respecting the dignity of every individual who relies on the Mission's services. As Lead Chef, you will work closely with the Food Service Manager to manage kitchen operations efficiently and within budget constraints, playing a vital role in maintaining high standards for food quality and safety.
Responsibilities include directing kitchen operations such as food preparation, cooking, and cleanup, while overseeing food service needs for other areas like the Daycare. You will supervise a diverse team – attendants, cooks, volunteers, and specialty department coordinators – ensuring coordinated efforts and smooth service delivery. Menu planning, ordering, and utilizing donations effectively are key functions that contribute to offering balanced and appealing meals that meet nutritional standards. The Lead Chef also maintains strong communication with vendors and donation providers, handles issues swiftly by notifying management as needed, and diligently keeps kitchen reports including temperature logs and meal counts. Upholding cleanliness and readiness for inspections are core expectations, ensuring the kitchen environment is safe and compliant with health regulations.
Buffalo City Mission offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes fully paid employer medical coverage with a single high premium, a Health Savings Account (HSA), vision coverage, employer-paid life insurance, and supplemental insurance options. Beyond benefits, the Mission fosters a workplace culture where faith integrates with service, and each team member contributes significantly to the Mission’s goal of changing lives through compassionate care. This position calls for someone dedicated not only to culinary excellence but also to serving with purpose and embodying the Mission's values of faith, compassion, and community.
