Job Description

Buffalo City Mission is a faith-based nonprofit organization located in Buffalo, New York, dedicated to serving men, women, and families facing significant barriers to stability. Rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the organization is more than just a workplace – it is a community united by compassion, faith, and a shared commitment to transforming lives. Since its founding, Buffalo City Mission has been a beacon of hope, providing shelter, support services, and opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose. The mission impacts thousands each year through a variety of programs designed to address homelessness, addiction recovery, and job readiness among vulnerable populations.

The organization takes pride in fostering a culture where faith inspires action and service is viewed as a calling. Team members at Buffalo City Mission find themselves immersed in an environment that values collaboration, compassion, and a commitment to making a tangible difference in the community. With a focus on holistic care, the mission integrates spiritual support with practical assistance, encouraging personal growth and restoration.

The Lead Chef position at Buffalo City Mission is a full-time role based at the men’s shelter in Buffalo, NY. The hourly wage ranges from $19.00 to $20.00, with a schedule that includes Monday through Wednesday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Friday and Saturday from 5:30 AM to 1:30 PM. This role is vital to the mission’s food service operations, ensuring nutritious and healthy meals are prepared and served to those in need. As the Lead Chef, you will oversee daily kitchen activities, assist the Food Service Manager with budget preparations, supervise kitchen staff and volunteers, and maintain high standards of cleanliness and food safety.

This role demands culinary expertise alongside strong leadership abilities. You will be responsible for menu planning that incorporates donations and nutritional guidelines, managing vendor relationships, and keeping accurate kitchen records, including temperature logs and meal counts. Upholding a clean and inspection-ready kitchen environment is essential. The position supports the broader mission by ensuring that every meal served contributes positively to the physical and emotional wellbeing of the shelter’s residents.

Buffalo City Mission offers competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, which includes medical coverage (with the employer fully paying for the single-high premium), a Health Savings Account (HSA), vision coverage, employer-paid life insurance, and supplemental insurance options. Beyond these, the organization aims to create a supportive workplace where each employee’s faith journey and commitment to service are respected and encouraged. Joining Buffalo City Mission as a Lead Chef means becoming part of a larger purpose-driven team dedicated to restoring hope and fostering transformation within the community.
