The Lead Cashier (LC) role at Ulta Beauty plays a critical role in ensuring efficient guest transactions and upholding the highest standards of cashwrap cleanliness and aesthetics. This position goes beyond traditional cashier responsibilities, as the LC assists in training new cashiers and cross-training other team members. The role requires someone with experience in cashiering who can proactively collaborate, lead, and positively influence peers. The Lead Cashier is vital in driving the store's loyalty results through a strong focus on sales performance, guest experience, and loyalty programs including credit offerings.

The LC supports the leadership team by managing vital register functions during opening and closing shifts, completing associate exit inspections, and managing cashier chat in/outs. They are expected to passionately deliver a superior guest experience while advocating the benefits of Ulta Beauty’s loyalty cycle. Acting as an ambassador for the brand, the LC ensures that every guest feels valued and engaged, pairing them with associates for personalized consultations and product demonstrations that boost sales and elevate the guest experience.

In addition to sales and customer interaction, the Lead Cashier maintains excellent standards of operational compliance, including adherence to all company policies and procedures related to cashier operations, cash control, and workplace safety. The position requires someone who can maintain store aesthetics—ensuring the cashwrap and impulse fixtures are well-organized, replenished, and guest-ready at all times. Attention to detail is crucial as the LC plays a key role in minimizing shrink and protecting company assets.

Beyond transactional duties, the Lead Cashier contributes to building an inclusive, team-oriented environment by supporting peers and providing training guidance. The role demands strong communication skills, the ability to multitask and problem-solve quickly, and the capability to adapt in a fast-paced retail setting. A flexible work schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays is required, and because of the responsibilities involving cash handling, the role is only open to individuals 18 years or older.

Job Requirements

  • Work a flexible schedule to include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • The role of Lead Cashier cannot be held by a minor
  • Any associate being hired or promoted into the role must be 18 years of age
  • Continuous mobility throughout the store during shift, including twisting
  • Frequent bending, pulling, pushing, crouching, stooping, twisting, and reaching during shift
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 25 lbs during shift
  • Continuous coordination and manipulation of objects during shift

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma is preferred
  • 2 years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience preferred
  • Proven ability to delegate, multi-task, and problem-solve
  • Demonstrated knowledge and passion for guest service and a competency for selling
  • Experience addressing guests concerns and questions promptly and professionally to deliver exceptional customer service
  • Demonstrated experience in exceeding sales goals and training new hires
  • Proficient with basic technology (e.g., Point of Sale system and Apple devices)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships
  • Ability to react under pressure, use good judgment in ambiguous situations, and be flexible/adaptable

Job Duties

  • Contribute to meeting or exceeding the store’s goals related to retail and service sales, omni-channel, guest loyalty (including credit), and retail shrink
  • Ensure that each guest receives exceptional service by providing a guest-friendly environment which includes greeting and engaging each guest, personalizing service to their needs, and recommending Ulta Beauty products and/or services
  • Courteously handle sales, refunds, and exchanges
  • Ensure each guest receives exceptional service by pairing them with an associate to perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to drive sales and the guest service experience
  • Book appointments for and support the execution of services and in-store events that deliver an unrivaled guest experience while delivering on sales goals
  • Take ownership over the replenishment, organization, and maintenance of all cashwrap displays, supplies, and impulse fixtures to ensure guest-readiness at all times
  • Support the leadership team by completing cashier chat ins and chat outs as well as associate exit inspections as needed
  • Assist in the training of new cashiers, and cross-training other associates in cashiering
  • Ensure the completion of all transactions, including guest returns and associate transactions, and the proper control of all cash and media at the cashwrap according to company policies and procedures
  • Maintain outstanding store standards and overall store cleanliness throughout the store, including at the cashwrap, on the sales floor, and in the restrooms, backroom, and break area
