The Lead Cashier (LC) role at Ulta Beauty is a critical position that ensures the smooth operation of guest transactions and maintains high standards in cashwrap areas, including cleanliness and visual appeal. This role supports the store’s leadership by assisting with open and close register functions and conducting associate exit inspections. Beyond technical duties, the Lead Cashier plays a leadership role by training new cashiers, cross-training other associates, and promoting a positive work environment that values collaboration and peer influence. The LC also plays a vital role in driving sales performance, enhancing guest experience, and achieving loyalty program results by engaging guests in the benefits of Ulta Beauty’s Loyalty Life Cycle. This person acts as a champion of the company’s mission and values, helping to create a welcoming and personalized experience for each guest.

In the Lead Cashier position, the individual will be responsible for greeting and engaging guests, managing sales transactions, and recommending products and services tailored to the customer’s needs. Booking appointments and supporting in-store events to boost guest engagement and sales are key parts of the role. The LC also ensures that the cashwrap and surrounding displays are well maintained, organized, and stocked at all times, contributing to an attractive and guest-ready environment. Regular attendance and reliability are essential to fulfill these duties effectively.

People management and development are important facets of the Lead Cashier role. The LC supports the leadership team by facilitating cashier chat ins and chat outs, performs associate exit inspections, and proactively stays updated on industry trends and product knowledge. The Lead Cashier is expected to lead by example, driving accountability among cashiers to deliver a consistent Ulta Beauty brand experience while following operational systems and prompts. Continuous professional development is encouraged through ongoing training programs that enhance brand, category, and sales expertise. Collaboration with store managers and associates is essential to support overall business growth and ensure a cohesive team environment.

From a process perspective, the Lead Cashier is responsible for ensuring compliance with Ulta Beauty’s policies and procedures, including dress code adherence, proper transaction handling, cash control, and operating standards. Maintaining exceptional cleanliness throughout the store—from the cashwrap to other store areas—is crucial for protecting company assets and minimizing losses. The Lead Cashier must contribute actively to loss prevention efforts and execute other operational tasks as directed. This role demands a passion for guest service, operational excellence, and leadership qualities to achieve outstanding results in a dynamic retail environment. This position requires flexible availability, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and is only open to individuals aged 18 or above due to its responsibilities.

Job Requirements

  • Flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to frequently bend, pull, push, crouch, stoop, twist, and reach during shift
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 25 lbs
  • Continuous mobility and coordination throughout the store
  • High school diploma preferred
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience or equivalent education and experience

Job Duties

  • Contribute to meeting or exceeding store sales, omni-channel, guest loyalty, and shrink goals
  • Ensure exceptional guest service by greeting, engaging, and personalizing service
  • Handle sales, refunds, and exchanges courteously
  • Support bookings and execution of services and in-store events
  • Maintain cashwrap displays, supplies, and impulse fixtures
  • Assist in training new cashiers and cross-training associates
  • Ensure compliance with policies, proper cash handling, and completion of register open/close functions
