Job Description
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a world-renowned pediatric treatment and research facility focused on curing catastrophic diseases in children, primarily cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Established with a mission to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment, St. Jude is a leader in pediatric healthcare and scientific innovation. The hospital is a nonprofit institution where families never pay for treatment, travel, housing, or food, so they can focus fully on helping their children survive and thrive. St. Jude is known for its cutting-edge cancer research programs, compassionate care, and commitment to excellence in service. It values a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters the development and well-being of both patients and employees.
The role of Lead Barista at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital involves overseeing the daily shift operations of the coffee shop, ensuring a high level of quality, service, and cleanliness standards are consistently maintained. This position serves as a peer leader, supporting, training, and mentoring fellow baristas to align with established standards and operational procedures. The Lead Barista is tasked with coordinating shift operations in the absence of a Supervisor, managing inventory levels, and ensuring compliance with food safety and sanitation protocols. Working a schedule from Monday to Friday, 6:45 am to 3:15 pm, this role demands attention to detail, leadership skills, and the ability to uphold food service excellence in a fast-paced hospital environment.
The candidate will perform a broad range of responsibilities, including taking a leadership role during management absences, ensuring timely completion of daily tasks such as schedule alterations, product orders, cleaning assignments, and opening or closing procedures. They will oversee deliveries, enforce safety and sanitary requirements, maintain accurate records, and communicate customer feedback to managers for continuous improvement. This position also involves training and guiding team members on complex activities, addressing escalations or deviations in service delivery, and contributing to the achievement of departmental goals.
Applicants should possess a High School diploma or GED as a minimum education requirement, with a Bachelor’s degree preferred, especially in hospitality management or related fields. Experience in hospital food services or hospitality environments is highly desirable, emphasizing skills in food preparation, cash management, and beverage preparation. Certification as a Food Protection Manager through an ANSI-approved program is mandatory within 30 days of employment, along with Starbucks Barista Trainer Certification and completion of a coffee academy program within six months.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of food service standards, guidelines, and regulations; ability to work independently; physical fitness required to perform in a stressful environment; and exceptional problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills. Physical demands include regular standing, walking, occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, and working in environments exposed occasionally to chemicals or heat.
Compensation for this role ranges from $19.50 to $33.00 per hour, reflective of experience, skills, certifications, and organizational needs. Benefits are comprehensive, supporting employee well-being and professional development, aligned with St. Jude’s commitment to employee satisfaction and excellence in pediatric care support.
