Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS), a pivotal agency within the State of Nebraska, is dedicated to the safety, security, and well-being of both the community and the incarcerated individuals entrusted to its care. The NDCS operates several correctional facilities across Nebraska, with a mission that emphasizes rehabilitation, humane treatment, and the maintenance of secure environments. One of the key institutions within NDCS is the Reception and Treatment Center located in Lincoln, Nebraska. This particular center is instrumental in managing incoming inmates by providing initial assessment, orientation, and essential services that help facilitate their transition into the correctional system.

The Reception and Treatment Center is currently seeking motivated and diligent candidates to fill the position of Laundry Operator. This role is crucial in the everyday functionality of the facility, ensuring that all laundry operations are handled efficiently and safely. The Laundry Operator is responsible for overseeing the washing, drying, ironing, sorting, delivery, and maintenance of laundry, utilizing inmate labor to carry out these tasks. This position requires a strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of sanitation and safety within the laundry area.

This role is hourly and offers a competitive wage of approximately $19.598 per hour, reflecting the specialized nature and operational importance of the position. Candidates should be ready to work in a correctional environment, demonstrating both supervisory skills and the ability to manage commercial-grade laundry equipment. The Laundry Operator ensures that all linens, uniforms, and other washable items are cleaned and maintained properly to support the need for hygiene and order throughout the facility.

Working at the Reception and Treatment Center extends beyond the standard operational duties, as the Laundry Operator plays a part in the broader correctional goals of NDCS by managing inmate participation in laundry duties, thus contributing to the correctional environment’s smooth operation. The role involves supervising inmate workers, maintaining equipment and supplies, and safeguarding the laundry area in accordance with established safety protocols. It also involves coordinating with other departments to ensure that laundry services meet the facility’s ongoing requirements.

Applicants must demonstrate physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance and are required to complete mandatory pre-employment screenings such as a medical exam and drug test. Successful candidates will undergo and must complete the fully paid Nebraska Corrections Training Program held at the Staff Training Academy, which prepares employees to meet the standards expected by the NDCS. The position thoughtfully offers a pathway for individuals seeking a long-term career in correctional services, supporting their professional development and operational excellence.
