Our company, based in Hazelwood, MO, is a well-established organization specializing in scientific and industrial laboratory services. We are currently seeking a dedicated Lab Technician I to join our team for a 12-plus-month duration assignment in Hazelwood, MO. This role is essential for supporting the department's efforts to develop and validate new or redeveloped tests and products. The Lab Technician I will play a pivotal role in conducting microbial testing, maintaining cultures, and assisting with various laboratory projects while ensuring all tasks comply with current quality and safety standards. The position demands a proactive individual who can handle complex laboratory procedures, contribute to process improvements, and work effectively both independently and collaboratively within teams. While the pay rate is dependent on experience, this opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience in a GMP-regulated setting, with potential exposure to cutting-edge laboratory instrumentation such as the VITEK 2 system.

The Lab Technician I will be responsible for the handling of microbiological cultures including bacteria and yeasts, performing microbial testing using sophisticated instruments, and assisting with the preparation and execution of various lab projects and investigations. Detailed documentation and strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are crucial aspects of the job, along with maintaining a safe work environment and utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE). The role also involves coordinating work assignments, prioritizing tasks efficiently, and actively participating in ongoing process improvements and maintenance of laboratory operations. Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in life sciences, with practical knowledge of aseptic techniques, laboratory safety, and microbial handling, preferably with experience in GMP environments. Strong communication skills, analytical thinking, and computer proficiency are vital to perform well in this position.

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Handles microbiological cultures including bacteria and yeasts using appropriate safety precautions
  • Identifies mixed cultures and escalates to appropriate personnel
  • Fulfills culturing requests from Industrialization
  • Assists with prep work and supports various lab projects such as opening card pouches and labeling cards for setups
  • Performs microbial testing using the VITEK 2 instrument in a timely manner
  • Generates and reviews VITEK 2 data
  • Participates in investigations as needed
  • Communicates results or problems to supervisor or senior staff members
  • Monitors instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Maintains internal documentation of all process steps as outlined in SOPs
  • Contributes to ongoing process improvement efforts
  • Coordinates work assignments and prioritizes tasks independently
  • Participates in a team approach to laboratory maintenance
  • Maintains a safe work environment and uses appropriate personal protective equipment
