Job Requirements

  • AA or AS degree, or equivalent 2+ years of work experience in a technical or analytical field
  • willingness to commit to The Island Way (IES core values of) Kīnāʻole, Aloha, Lōkahi and Hoʻohana

  • pass background check including periodic job-related physical abilities testing as required
  • this is a safety sensitive position and random drug testing is required
  • valid driver's license with clean abstract
  • willingness to devote the time as needed to meet packet and task deadlines

  • must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire
  • must be able to work rotating day and occasional night shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime

Job Qualifications

  • AA or AS degree, or equivalent 2+ years of work experience in a technical or analytical field
  • BS Chemistry or equivalent degree from an accredited college/university preferred
  • 2 years of laboratory experience preferred
  • refinery, energy, chemical, LPG plant, fuels terminal experience preferred
  • ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve test equipment issues and erroneous test results preferred
  • ability to uphold strict ethical standards: integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality
  • proficient Microsoft Office Suite and computer skills, including editing and proofreading
  • ability to maintain automated and manual record keeping systems
  • strong sense of team spirit and ability to transfer it to others
  • ability to work independently
  • ability to evaluate information and exercise good judgment in making decisions

Job Duties

  • Performs a wide variety of tests on fuel samples and finished products per established procedures
  • test methods vary from simple methods such as density/gravity, color, and viscosity to more complex methods such as knock (octane) testing, automatic distillation and titration, gas chromatography
  • checks test results against specifications
  • provides analysis and test results that are technically sound, legally defensible, free of undue influence within an agreed upon timeframe
  • validates data, performs calculations, and reports test results
  • utilizes standard Quality Control / Quality Assurance processes to ensure accuracy and precision of results
  • participates in laboratory audits
  • checks and calibrates equipment, reviews test methods, and performs minor preventive or corrective maintenance within an agreed upon timeframe
  • ability to identify test equipment issues and erroneous test results
  • handles multiple, concurrent assignments while managing priorities with customers
  • reviews issued electronic communications such as information & job tasks for the day, email audible directives, and routine duties for the shift are completed
  • accountable for maintaining general housekeeping of assigned work area
  • conduct fire & safety equipment inspections in the laboratory
  • maintains commitment to a high standard of safety, comply with all safety laws and IES safety policies/rules and report actual and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
