Job Description

Maryland Primary Care Physicians, LLC (MPCP) is the largest physician-owned primary care group in Maryland, with a well-established presence in Central Maryland through ten office locations. For nearly 30 years, MPCP has been dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare services to families in the region. The organization is nationally recognized for its commitment to patient-centered care and convenience, blending traditional family medicine with innovative clinical practices. Continuing its legacy of excellence, MPCP operates an on-site clinical laboratory that conducts moderate complexity testing. This laboratory adheres to stringent regulatory standards with CLIA Certificate of Compliance and COLA accreditation. Annually, the laboratory processes more than 3 million tests and is supported by a skilled team of 18 laboratory professionals. This infrastructure plays a crucial role in maintaining the high standard of care MPCP is known for, expediting diagnostic results that aid in effective and timely patient management.

We are currently seeking a highly qualified Laboratory Director to lead and oversee the comprehensive operations of this robust, multi-faceted clinical laboratory. The Laboratory Director will bear the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and timely delivery of patient test results, while maintaining full compliance with regulatory frameworks including CLIA (42 CFR Part 493) and COLA accreditation standards. This pivotal role includes managing laboratory functions across all phases of testing—pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic—and implementing systems to continually uphold quality assurance and control. The successful candidate will exercise leadership over laboratory personnel and govern key operational areas such as environmental safety, proficiency testing, quality control, and documentation. They will also be entrusted with managing procurement, budgeting, and vendor relations, ensuring that the laboratory’s resources and technologies remain at the forefront of clinical practice. Reporting directly to the Medical Director, this position offers a competitive salary ranging from $150,000 to $200,000 annually, commensurate with experience and education. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience for Master's degree pathway
  • At least 2 years of laboratory training and 2 years supervisory experience for Bachelor's degree pathway
  • MMR and Flu vaccinations required unless medically or religiously exempted
  • PPD test required
  • Background check and drug test required

Job Qualifications

  • Licensed MD or DO board certified in anatomic and/or clinical pathology
  • Earned doctoral degree in chemical, biological, clinical/medical laboratory science, or medical technology field with HHS-approved board certification
  • At least 1 year of experience directing or supervising non-waived testing
  • 20 continuing education credit hours covering director responsibilities
  • Master's degree in relevant field with supervisory and laboratory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with comprehensive laboratory training and supervisory experience
  • Prior experience as a CLIA laboratory director or technical consultant in a similar setting preferred
  • Knowledge of COLA accreditation standards and survey processes
  • Experience with clinical specialties such as chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunoassay
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems including LabDaq and Epic
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills

Job Duties

  • Provide overall management and direction of the laboratory and its personnel
  • Ensure the physical and environmental conditions of the laboratory are adequate and safe
  • Ensure testing systems provide quality results appropriate for patient care, including verification of test method performance specifications before use
  • Employ a sufficient number of qualified personnel and ensure each is appropriately trained, with documented competency assessed at required intervals
  • Ensure enrollment and successful participation in an approved proficiency testing program, with PT results reviewed and corrective action taken as needed
  • Establish and maintain quality control and quality assessment programs, and ensure problems are identified and corrected
  • Ensure reported results include pertinent reference intervals and that a system is in place for reporting and addressing critical and imminently life-threatening values
