The role of Laboratory Assistant at Saint Mary’s Health Network is designed for individuals committed to supporting clinical laboratory operations under the direct supervision of licensed personnel. This position plays a critical role in ensuring timely and accurate processing of laboratory specimens while adhering strictly to guidelines set forth by regulatory bodies such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and the California Business and Professions Codes. The Laboratory Assistant will handle essential clerical tasks like computer data entry, filing, telephone communications, and greeting patients and visitors with professionalism and courtesy. They are expected to demonstrate familiarity with laboratory terminology, phlebotomy, specimen processing across various disciplines including pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, and chemistry, as well as the handling of specimens for reference labs. This position requires meticulous attention to cleanliness and organization of laboratory work areas, stock management, and may include assisting with instrument maintenance and quality control measures following proper training. The role is vital for maintaining the smooth flow of laboratory functions and supporting the healthcare team in delivering excellent patient care outcomes. Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • at least one year of clinical laboratory experience performing similar functions preferred
  • state certification as CPT I or CPT II if applicable
  • current BCLS (AHA) certification upon hire and must remain current
  • ability to follow CLIA and California Business and Professions Codes guidelines
  • ability to work under direct supervision of licensed personnel at all times
  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • capability to maintain a clean and organized workspace
  • capacity to learn and perform assigned laboratory and clerical duties as per training
  • willingness to work per diem with variable schedules

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • minimum one-year clinical laboratory experience preferred
  • state certification as CPT I or CPT II if required by state
  • current BCLS (AHA) certificate preferred and must be maintained

Job Duties

  • performing computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties

  • possessing knowledge of laboratory test terminology
  • demonstrating working knowledge of phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment
  • processing specimens for pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank
  • processing specimens for reference laboratories
  • stocking and ordering routine supplies
  • maintaining cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas
  • processing or placing specimens on laboratory instruments following established policies
  • performing instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assisting in quality control procedures, and performing primary culture inoculations, stain slide preparations, and subcultures with proper training
  • assisting in pathology training and evaluation
  • performing runner duties such as monitoring, mailing, faxing, answering phones, and interdepartmental deliveries
