Job Description
HomeFirst is a nonprofit organization established in 1980 with a dedicated mission to end homelessness in the Bay Area. With nearly 45 years of experience, HomeFirst provides low-barrier programming and systems leadership to support individuals experiencing homelessness by offering immediate resources and addressing long-term housing needs. The organization views housing as a fundamental human right and emphasizes a collaborative approach to solving homelessness. HomeFirst operates with core values of kindness, passion, and excellence, fostering a compassionate and impactful environment. The Boccardo Reception Center located at 2011 Little Orchard Street, San Jose, is one of the key sites where these programs are delivered to help the community.
The Kitchen/Cook New Start Trainee position is part of a unique Training Compensation Program designed by HomeFirst to help individuals gain job readiness, hands-on work experience, and training. This temporary, part-time role spans a six-month term and requires participants to engage in four hours per day, five days per week of a balanced blend of classroom learning and work-based activities. This program does not offer long-term or permanent employment after completion, as it is focused entirely on training and development to prepare trainees for future employment opportunities.
In this role, trainees work under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor and receive direct instruction and guidance from the Food Services Supervisor. Responsibilities include preparing meals, operating kitchen equipment, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring food safety according to agency policies. The position offers a competitive hourly wage of $27.98 and provides valuable exposure to a professional kitchen environment. Additionally, participation is limited to current BRC location participants, emphasizing HomeFirst's commitment to supporting individuals already engaged in its services.
This role fosters a positive, customer-focused attitude towards guests, co-workers, and clients, promoting teamwork and collaboration in a fast-paced kitchen setting. Trainees contribute to improving kitchen operations and food services through active participation in meetings and ongoing feedback. The program emphasizes safety, sanitation, and accurate inventory management practices to minimize waste and maximize efficiency.
HomeFirst supports its staff and trainees through California Paid Sick Leave (PSL), ensuring compliance with labor laws. This position is ideal for entrants into the workforce, particularly those seeking skills development and practical experience in food service and culinary arts within a socially responsible organization dedicated to social justice and equity. By working at HomeFirst, trainees become part of a progressive organization that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and fostering an environment of belonging, accountability, and continuous improvement.
